Description

A message from the Competition Manager, Swim England South East - PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE

The conditions for the Region Swimming Championships contains the following:

To manage space on poolside and to comply with conditions of hire of the pool used for the competition, swimmers are not allowed to carry a bag larger than a small draw string bag onto poolside. This rule will be strictly enforced.

If you don’t know what we mean, here is a picture of largest bag we will accept:

The size is approximately 40cm by 30cm.

Everyone needs to realise that we will be enforcing this condition. We will have security on the entrance to the pool deck at both Wycombe and Crawley and nobody will be allowed to bring a large bag or backpack into the pool hall.

Why do we do this?

This is primarily a health and safety issue. Unfortunately, as a region, we are not blessed with any pool that is really suitable for regional competitions. None of our pools have adequate space around the pool for the number of swimmers we have accepted for the competition. (Almost 700 for the 15/over competition, not counting those there only for team events). We rely on the co-operation and judgement of the pool management to ensure that we comply with health and safety restrictions.

If we can control the amount of space taken up with bags, we can get away with the number of swimmers involved. If however, we cannot manage space sensibly, then we will be forced to drastically cut the number of swimmers we can accept. That could mean that pour championships are harder to qualify for than the Swim England Summer Meet!

What are swimmers supposed to do with their large bags?

We understand that swimmers travelling for a four day competition will need to have big bags, and we are also aware that there are not enough lockers available at either Wycombe and Crawley. At both pools, this year, we will be providing an area where swimmers can leave their big bags. At Wycombe it will be an area of the sports hall, at Crawley it will be a separate room.

Security in both areas will be light and there is no way that we can ensure that bags are only accessed by their owner. Therefore, we STRONGLY recommend that swimmers do not bring valuables and leave them in their bags.

A word about behaviour

Last year the majority of swimmers, parents and coaches co-operated with our attempts to apply the bag restriction.

Unfortunately, the behaviour of a small minority was not acceptable. The following is aimed at that small minority.

We have a zero tolerance policy regarding

  1. Any abuse (verbal or physical) of the people who are applying security
  2. Any cynical attempt to by-pass the rules (last year we had parents dropping large bags from the balcony and swimmers looking for “back doors” to get their bags onto poolside).

If swimmers are asked not to bring bags onto poolside or are asked to remove them, we expect them to comply.

If everyone co-operates, we will not have any problems.

Thank you

Head Coach Notes:

This meet is our next mid cycle meet where we will have a mini taper on individual need. It therefore provides one of the best opportunities to set times in the National Qualifying window. However swimmers with strong window swims already should still do their best events as performance at Championships is an important experience. Swimmers should have 1-2 swims per session and speak to Greg if any questions. Relays will need to be reviewed in due course but should not affect events choices.
