Dear Parents and Athletes,

We have had some brilliant success over the last few years with participation numbers increasing in training and competitions naturally leading to Dorset, South West and National medalists in Open Water Swimming.

We are fortunate within the club setup in having experienced coaches and swimmers and following the updating of our Risk Assessment, Emergency Action Plan and Safeguarding Policy in line with Swim England Insurance we can commence training from Tuesday May 22nd

This year we are bringing together a small Open Water sub-committee to develop a long-term strategy in creating the best environment, pathway and safety for our Open Water section, along with some social BBQ's around training.

The training and competitions are open for athletes aged 12 (by 31st Dec) and above.  Swimmers must be competent in distance swimming. 12 -13 years compete in 1.5k events, 14 and 15 years in 3k and 16+ in 5 k events.  Pool training provides the fitness required, but the Open Water swimming develops the tactical and technical skilled required.

The training will commence for this Open Water season and will be run out of Branksome Chine in front of the cafe positioned in the car park.

Please read the following information and confirm your attendance, through Team Unify

Parents for U18's

As part of our Risk Assessment and Emergency Action Plan, we must insist that each child under 18 has a designated parent/ fellow parent stay during each session.  Where we require people to volunteer for beach walking and signing swimmers in and out of their sessions.  Furthermore, we had a couple of small incidents last year, where a swimmer sat in their parent’s car with heaters on to gradually warm them up.  Then we had to co-ordinate all exits from the sea for a fast-approaching lightning storm.  Parents are a critical part of our Action Plans to deal with individuals so that vigilance and direction by the coaches can be upheld. So unless your child is vouched for by an adult, they will be unable to partake.

Those that are new to the sport or have grown considerably will need to invest in a wetsuit as it is not warm enough to swim without one until much later in the Open Water season and then it will depend on a certain temperature being reached.  For now, FINA (the governing body) have not issued a proper wetsuit guide of which suits to invest in and therefore our advice is to hire a suit for the season. Best places to get them from are TriUK (In Yeovil) or Wiggle (Online).  For a try on or a fit and we know that TriUK in Yeovil are set up with a pool so you can "try before you hire"

We look forward to meeting you for the first session and another salty season.

Warm Regards

Barry on Behalf of the Coaches
