BICESTER BLUE FINS YOUNG SWIMMERS TRIUMPHANT AT DIDDY LEAGUE 

 

The final round of the Milton Keynes & District Junior Swimming League (otherwise known as Diddy League) took place at Aquavale in Aylesbury on Saturday and the young squad of 9-12 year olds from Bicester Blue Fins smashed the competition to take first place! 

 

The Bicester Village sponsored team were competing in the final round of the second division gala against five other teams - St Ives, ModerniansBromptonFlitwick Dolphins, and Staines B team. 

 

The gala got off to a great start with the relay teams taking second positions in the 12 year old girls 4 x 25m Medley Relay, 11 year old girls and boys 4 x 25m Freestyle Relay, and the 10 year old boys 4 x 25m Medley Relay. Meanwhile, the 10 year old girls team excelled with a first place in the 4 x 25m Medley Relay with a team of Olivia Sheldrake, Holly Mclellan, Isla Bohannon & Olivia Jordan. 

 

The first places kept on coming with Bicester achieving 16 in total! In the individual races Bicester’s victories came from 10 year old Isla Bohannon who swan her heart out to win two 1 st  places in 50m Breaststroke and 50m Freestyle. Harry Wynne-Jones took first in the 11 and 12 year old 50m Butterfly whilst younger teammate Zac Powell took a great win in the 10 year old boys 25m Butterfly and in the same age category a fab second place in the 50m Breaststroke. 

 

Youngsters Freddie Kemp and Holly Mclellan showed their determination to be just as successful as their teammates. Freddie took first place in the boys 9 year old 25m Freestyle and third in the boys 9 year old 25m Backstroke and Holly smashed first in the girls 9 year old 25m Breaststroke, both demonstrating impressive wins against some strong competition. 

 

The older girls age group also shone with Georgia Usher swimming to an exciting first place in the girls 11 year old 50m Breaststroke and Georgia took a very close second in the girls 11 year old 50m Freestyle. Tia Falkner also secured a first place finish in the girls 12 year old 50m Butterfly and went on to take a third place

 

in the 12 year old 50m Freestyle in a very fast paced race. Lauren McKenzie took a great first place position in the girls 12 year old 50m Breaststroke and William Jones sent the crowds wild with a great first position in the 10 year old 50m Freestyle and followed on with a third place in the 10 year old 50m Backstroke. 

 

Important points were also gained with second place by Freddie Bunce in the boys 11 year old 50m Freestyle and third places for Harriet Gower in 11 year old 50m Butterfly and Cara Roe in the girls age 9 25m Backstroke. Other swimmers earning team points were Joshua Best, Grace Bradney, Isla Dunn, Charlotte Kemp, Iona MclellanCatelin Laverick, Mia Busby, Katelin Cavill, Carson Walbert, Leo Jayakody, Sebastian MacGilchrist and Noah Powell. 

 

As the relays resumed, the team had really warmed up and the crowds cheered them on to take first place positions in both the girls and boys 10 year old 4 x 25m Freestyle Relay. Also, the team took very close second places in the girls and the boys 11 year old 4 x 25m Medley Relay. 

 

The final event was the 8x25m Canon Freestyle Relay comprising the fastest boy and girl swimmers from the four age categories. After a thrilling race, the Blue Fins team of Holly Mclellan, Freddie Kemp, Isla Bohannon, Zac Powell, Georgia Usher, Freddy Bunce, Tia Falkner & Harry Wynne-Jones scored a victorious first place. 

 

Overall the squad finished in a well-deserved first place! The final places were 1st Bicester Blue Fins (198), 2nd St Ives (197), 3rd Modernians (176), 4 th  Brompton (173), 5th Flitwick Dolphins (137) and 6th Staines ‘B’ (103). It was an amazing end to the final round gala! 

 

Head Coach Craig Oliver said: “These young swimmers were on a mission this evening. The atmosphere poolside was electric and we had the loudest cheering by far, which definitely helped boost each swimmer when racing. Such a great team spirit and effort was fantastic to see in this final round. What a start to the season for our young Bicester Blue Fins swimmers! We are all immensely proud.
