Swim England South-East Regional Winter (Open) Championships

WDSC attended the Swim England South East Regional Winter (Open) Championships in Portsmouth over the weekend of 4/5 November and came away with some fantastic early season results.

For this year the event was swum long course and many swimmers were using the event to pick up qualifying times for the upcoming National Winter Championships in December, along with the possibility of gaining a place on the SER Regional Off Shore Camp in February.

WDSC sent one of the largest teams from the South East region and showed its strength in depth with 26 swimmers qualifying for finals on Saturday evening (compared with Oxford 14, Thanet 13 and Guildford 11). Our swimmers ranked highly and demonstrated some great progress in their racing skills and racing strategies.

Head Coach Kevin Brooks commented “ The most pleasing thing for me, this early in the season was seeing the great progress made in racing skills and pacing. Swimmers back-ended very well making-up several places in the 2nd half of their races. And It was fantastic to see some of our younger Junior Swimmers reach finals for the first time – such as Tom Sansome, Megan Daley and Joshua Williams."

And 5 WDSC swimmers have now been selected for the SER Team that will travel to Flanders for some International racing in February 2018. Millie Sansome, Ellie Cowan, James Baxter, Ceara Barber and Caitlin Mackay were all successful in reaching the qualifying standards over the weekend. Head Coach Kevin Brooks was also pre-selected as the SER Team Head Coach.

Well done to all of the swimmers who raced over the weekend!
