35 of our swimmers ranging in age from 12 to 18, along with 7 members of staff – 1 head coach, 4 assistant coaches and 2 chaperones, took part in the warm weather training camp held in Cyprus from 19th to 26th October.
We were greeted at the airport by the Arena Sports Rep and the coach journey to the hotel was quite enjoyable despite some very hungry swimmers.
We stayed at The Coral Beach Hotel & Resort, which has everything you look for when organising an overseas camp; excellent service, lovely facilities (the outdoor Olympic swimming pool is only a few minutes’ walk from the hotel grounds), nice accommodation, great food and pleasant weather.
The swimmers completed a total of 13 sessions, each 2 hours long, covering an average distance of 4.5 to 6 km per session depending on age and abilities across 5 lanes, totalling an impressive 60 to 75 km.
Thanks to Lee, Louise, Muriel, Grant and Kevin, the swimmers benefited from tailored training sessions ranging from long distance to individual No 1 stroke as well as some ‘taper’ sessions at the end of the week for 9 swimmers preparing for the ASA East Region 2017 Winter Championships (50m).
Towards the end of this intensive training week, there were some very tired bodies in the pool however they continued to train hard and, most importantly, they were still smiling and having fun!
Let’s not forget that the benefits of warm weather training, if done properly, include increased fitness which should translate into improved performance come the race season.
We are very proud of all the swimmers for their extremely hard work and dedication.
Many thanks to all the staff at Coral Beach, Arena Sports and Sports Abroad for their support in making this camp another successful and memorable one.
