30 December 2017
Whilst Coach Barry was away in Sheffield with our Winter National qualifiers, the remainder of our top Youth and Age Group swimmers and a select group from Rising Stars put in some superb performances at Bristol’s International pool in Hengrove. The main purpose of the meet for the younger swimmers was to develop the skills they had worked on in training and to make improvements at the end of 2017. For some, it was the first time swimming at a Level 2 meet. The emphasis therefore was not on times, but on the finer elements of racing.
Having achieved a hat-trick of top club achievements at the Swim Bournemouth Level 2 Short Course Meet on 25 & 26 November, the West Dorset December Open Meet on 2 & 3 December and the Dorset County Relays on 10 December, would we continue the trend?
The final outcome? At the end of a riveting weekend of racing, PSC were successful once again in achieving top club, with a total medal table of 32 Gold, 41 Silver and 41 Bronze.
Notable female performances came from Claire S (3rd place girl overall), Lottie V (4th place girl overall) and Ella M (6th place girl overall), while for the males, Max L achieved 3rd place boy overall, Robbie H (4th place boy overall) and Charlie M (6th place boy overall).
There were also a plethora of new short course club records, with a number in the backstroke and breastroke events. A total of 15 new club records were set by 8 swimmers. In the 9 year old age group, Jess H set 3 new club records in the 50m and 100m backstroke as well as the 200m IM, while Jack G set two new club records in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. In the 11 year old age category, Claire S set a new club record for the 100m backstroke, while for the 12 year old boys, it was Ryan O who set a new club record in the 100m breaststroke. Amy G and Robbie H (13 year olds) each set 3 new club records both in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke. Additionally, Jess R and Thea O’K also set Senior records in the 50m breastroke and 200m free, respectively.
Coach Jan commented that as well as the focus on the finer elements of racing “We also considered the importance of setting process goals to demonstrate how they can make a difference to the outcome. What followed was an absolute “Cracker” of a meet in every way as our swimmers pulled out some fine swims and did their club proud”.
Our thanks go to team managers for the weekend, Steve and Tracy and also to our top coaching team of Coaches Jan, Becky and Annie.
