Severnside Tritons – Opening Weekend of County Swimming Championships

Severnside Tritons’ young swimmers from Thornbury and Stroud kicked off the Gloucester County Swimming Championships this weekend (20/21 January) with one gold and two silvers ahead of the main weekends of competition over the coming month on 27/28 January, 10/11 February and 24/25 February.

82 individual swimmers from the Tritons will be competing across all events and distances during the four weekends against the county’s top swimmers and clubs, with swimmers aged of 11 to 18, taking part in a total of 508 races.

This weekend, the distance championships, there were five girls and seven boys competing and Chloe Barnard (aged 12) swept to gold by a clear 35 seconds in the 800 metre freestyle, Jess Part (aged 15) earned a silver at the same distance, and Lucas Tompkins (14) gained silver in the boys 1500 metre freestyle in the 14 year age-group.

Outside of the medals, there were also special performances from Cooper siblings, Zoe (13) and Zac (11) who achieved personal bests 800 and 1500 metre freestyle respectively.  Zac was swimming a time trial and was the only 11 year old to enter and swim the distance.

Director of Coaching Keith Smith, said: “We’re hugely proud of the number of Severnside Tritons entrants this year, showcased by the achievements of Chloe, Jess and Lucas in the 800 and 1500 freestyle. Each and every swimmer has worked extremely hard ahead of the counties, and we’re set for some exciting swimming.”

The Tritons captured a total of 67 medals in 2017, with 19 golds, 24 silvers and 24 bronzes across all events, and Smith added: “It is very rewarding to see the effort and success over the opening weekend, ahead of final preparations and training for the coming weeks. We’re hopeful over the next few weekends, we can build on the club’s achievements of previous years.”
