Everyone Active to invest £2.3 million in local leisure centres
We have officially awarded a 10-year contract to Sports and Leisure Management Ltd (SLM) for the delivery of our Leisure Services. SLM, which operates as Everyone Active, will take over the contract on 1 April 2018. The contract covers Berkhamsted Sports Centre, Hemel Hempstead Sports Centre, Hemel Hempstead School Courts, Jarman Park Athletics Track and Longdean Sports Centre.
As part of this contract, SLM will be investing more than £2.3 million into our flagship leisure facilities at Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted. This will provide quality leisure services for the community and an affordable and diverse range of sports facilities for everyone to enjoy, regardless of their age or ability. We will also be investing more than £3.5 million to refurbish Tring Swimming Pool and build a new athletics track and sports pavilion.
SLM will also be delivering its award-winning Learn to Swim programme to children in the borough, and was awarded the Facility Operator of the Year accolade at the 2017 Swim England National Awards.
SLM has 30 years’ experience of managing leisure facilities across the country and is the longest-established leisure operator in the UK. It prides itself on being a community-focused organisation that aims to get everyone active by doing at least 30 minutes of activity, five times a week. SLM currently operates more than 160 leisure facilities. The leisure centres will remain in Council ownership.
As part of the new agreement, Everyone Active will be paying us in excess of £6 million over the next 10 years to manage the leisure facilities.
Councillor Andrew Williams, Leader of the Council, said, “We are delighted to be partnering Everyone Active, who've been selected to manage our leisure facilities following a comprehensive review and tendering process. This contract will enable people of all ages to access high-quality, affordable leisure facilities and the new investment from SLM will ensure that the experience for users meets their needs and aspirations. It's also important that we get value for money for taxpayers and help to continue to protect front line services.
"There has been great public interest surrounding this contract and we know that users and staff at Sportspace have been worried. But I want to reassure them that Sportspace staff will be protected and transferred over to the new contract provider and that SLM is committed to working with clubs to help them increase membership and to get the most out of the facilities. SLM will also be delivering a wide range of community outreach programmes to ensure everyone is given the opportunity to get active.”
Duncan Jefford, Everyone Active’s Regional Director, said, “Improving the health and wellbeing of local communities sits at the heart of everything we do. I'm delighted that our extensive experience in the sports and leisure industry will now be used to benefit people in Dacorum and encourage them to become more active, as it has already done for so many people in neighbouring boroughs.
"This is a really exciting time for sports and leisure in the area, and I'm thrilled that Everyone Active has been chosen by Dacorum Borough Council to be a part of it. I'm very much looking forward to investing in the wellbeing of the community by significantly improving the quality of its leisure facilities and introducing a wealth of exciting sports and activity opportunities.”
