Masters Triathletes smash National Championships and European Qualifier 2019
Lena Poulton took to the top step of the podium at the weekend to be crowned Triathlon England National Champion in the 45-49 age category, having been runner-up last year and winner the year before. A fantastic achievement once again, especially finishing 6thfemale overall in a field of over 200 starters.
Lena wasn’t alone in bringing home some silverware as bionic Bev Childs won SILVER in 60-64, which is quite remarkable given it was only last year that she underwent a hip replacement. Sharon Hill also took SILVER in the 50-54 category.
Racing in hot conditions at Thorpe Park on Sunday 3 June, the WDSC Masters faced a relatively straightforward and open one-lap lake swim (750m), followed by an undulating horseshoe-shaped bike leg with some fast drags (20km) and a short-sharp two-lap run course which wound through the resort grounds (5km).
WDSC Head of Athletic Development coach Gemma Elliott-Wetton finished 10thin 30-34; Deborah Pratley was 11thin 40-44 and Neil Turner was 13thin 45-49.
Bev declared herself ‘more than chuffed’ with her result and Lena was similarly happy, although by the run she was regretting the double-shot-caffeine-gel that she had consumed on the bike leg, ‘live and learn’ as she put it afterwards. Neil finished strongly on the run making-up a number of places following a solid swim-bike and he is now chasing GB qualification in Cardiff later this month as well as racingin the GB teamat the ITU duathlon and aquathon championships in Denmark in July.
European Qualifier 2019
On the back of the National Championships, Bev and Sharon have qualified for the GB Team for the European Triathlon Championships next year, rumoured to be taking place in Russia.
Alan Harris finished in a strong 7thplace in 45-49 but he booked his slot in the GB team for next year by also finishing 1st qualifier in 50-54 which will be his age-group in 2019. Crossing the line in a time of 1.04:44 Alan was 42nd overall out of the 450 male competitors in all age-groups on the day.
Congratulations to all of the WDSC Masters taking part and thanks, as ever, to their long-suffering coaches at WDSC.
