CMK Autumn Newsletter

Season 2017-18 Newsletter

Dear Swimmers and Parents,

I have highlighted our achievements last season in recent newsletters, however want to comment briefly on the summer. We had a great British Summer Champs with Max Murphy winning a Silver and Bronze on Distance Freestyle events. Aiyana Lawson (4th & 5th) , Lottie Wynne-Jones (5th & 7th) and Jamie Hanss (5th) just missed out on medals but swam some great PBs. Other Finalists were Lucy Farmer and Isobel Jones. At English Champs, Elliot Jones, Josh Press, Marcus Johnson (Gold), Miles Drabwell (Bronze), Grace Spong and Rafe Dobson also all made finals along with Ayiana, Lottie (Gold) and Jamie (Bronze).

We are also looking forward to the last round of Junior League next week, with CMK top of the second division and looking for promotion.

Review of Changes in July

I am pleased with the initial response to changes made in July. There are some issues still to resolve at Committee level - reviewing fees to reflect some changes. Coaches also need to review some squad places with some swimmers being contacted in the next few weeks. If you wish to discuss your childs squad place with your group coach please arrange a suitable time to meet and discuss.

Land training developments have been positive, I continue to discuss delivery with the staff and look to progress this each few weeks. I would encourage swimmers to attend their available sessions in particular Sen2 land training has been low but seems to be picking up now the season is underway. Swimmers in Senior 1 NQT will have 1-2-1 discussions with me regarding their land programs shortly.

Nutrition

There were additional notes on Nutrition for each group on the recent schedule. Outlining expectations at different ages and levels. For parents this is one of the best ways you can help your child swimming performance as well as manage their energy with school and other activities. Key aspects are:

Balance: Variety will ensure all vitamins and minerals are covered. Too much of one food group may lead to a deficiency in another.

Fluid intake: Dehydration will lead to loss in performance and concentration, it takes a few days to correct afterwards so needs to be avoided in the first place.

Protein: This is a key food group for growth and repair. Dairy and meats are a good sources. Swimmers on higher training volumes should have protein shakes or bars after training to ensure this need is delivered quickly. Swimmers should be wary of supplements as these may contain banned substances.

Luton LC Training (Sen 1 sqauds)

LC training is, as before, for swimmers ranked in top 50 UK and at the same time. This begins on 10th September through to 3rd December. The following dates are not on due to other activities at the pool : 24/9, 1/10, 26/11, 10/12 (training will be at Stantonbury 6-8pm on these days unless informed otherwise but I will be looking for alternatives to avoid overcrowding

I am expecting the following swimmers to attend:

Elliot Jones, Rafe Dobson, Grace Spong, Marcus Johnson, Lucy Farmer, Max Murphy, Miles Drabwell, Aiyana Lawson, Kaeleah Lawson, Jamie Hanss, Lottie Wynne-Jones, Josh Press, Matt Masters, Ryan Anscomb and Oliver Maltby. Please let me know if you are not likely to attend.

This leaves CMK with a further 3-4 places these will be decided on age (it may not be practical for younger swimmers), attitude, attendance and performance (in particular likelihood of competing at National level) by me as Head Coach shortly. 1-2 further places will be held open for swimmers later in the season.

2017-18

I am looking forward to this season – we have some excellent potential for individuals to make their mark at National and International level. We also have some great young swimmers coming through with better training facilities available (esp Land Training) to help us move forwards. Arena League may well be less of a focus for us this year but still a fun meet with more focus on long term development and championships.

I am keen for us to progress our standards of training and competition – accepting and responding to the challenge of competing in such a high level county, region and nation.

Kind Regards,

Greg Buck

CMK Head Coach
