2018 Surrey County Champs Report

 Surrey County Champs 2018 Report

After a great start at the first weekend of county swimming in January, we once again found ourselves at SSP for another weekend of county championship competition on 10/11 Feb. Elmbridge started as they had finished in January with more PB’s, finalists and medalists.

On the weekend of 17/18 Feb we were travelling again, this time it was to the London Aquatics Centre at Stratford for 50m sprints and relays.  It is a fantastic venue for swimming and certainly brought out the best in Elmbridge swimmers. We once again came home with medals and ribbons.

The relays on the Sunday were particularly memorable, with great team efforts from swimmers spanning Juniors through to masters and coaches. Again more medal winning swimming.

Crystal Palace was the venue for the last sessions of this year’s championship over the weekend of 24/25 Feb. The clubs were informed that running the event was in doubt due to a ‘catastrophic power failure’ at the pool on the Thursday afternoon giving way to a worrying 24 hours and thoughts of the rescheduling problems that would ensue. However, with engineers working overnight, the problems were solved and the event went ahead. The pool was colder than most would have liked and I think this was reflected in the swimming and results, times were slower all round.

Sunday however, saw a much improved atmosphere at the pool and the water temperature was back to near normal. Even with the issues at the pool, Elmbridge swimmers exceled themselves yet again adding more medals, ribbons, finalists or top eight finishers.

Overall the the county championship 2018 for Elmbridge Phoenix SC has been huge success! We had more qualifying swimmers than in many years and the resulting ribbon and medal haul was unprecedented with 10 gold, 8 silver, 13 bronze, and 55 ribbons for 4-6th place finishes.
