Twenty six competitors aged between 9 and 17 swam in a number of events at the Garrison Sports Centre in Aldershot this weekend. For many it was their first experience of an Olympic-sized pool (50m) and for the more experienced swimmer the start to the long course racing season.
Coach Chris Bennett said “Long course swimming is straight-up tough. Without the walls to save you oodles or so of strokes it forces you to maintain the rhythm, stroke length and stroke rate. If this is not sustained, it will expose the swimmers weaknesses in technique. All swimmers were faced with positive criticism, which helped in delivering successful/positive race plans.”
Stand Out Swims:
*Jonathan Rudd for executing a strong start and finish in the 50m Backstroke, came 1st in his heat.
*Sophie Cunningham went all out in the 100m freestyle, held good rhythm and finished strong with a new personal best time.
*Veronica Venuti, *Victoria Bunimovich and *Henry Gray all gained personal best times in the 200m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley.
*Lauren Shaffer for delivering a great race strategy in the 200m Butterfly, made the regional qualifying time.
*Mehmet Zeren for an impressive tally of medals won.
