While most of the population of London and the UK were basking in the lovely sun and high temps of the Bank Holiday Weekend, 18 of our top youth (15+) swimmers were poolside at the London Aquatic Centre for 3 days of intense racing during the 2018 London Regional Youth Summer Champs.
Our swimmers performed well pushing Brompton SC into 16th place overall in the Top Club points table (36 clubs scored points and 40+ clubs entered the meet). We had 11 swimmers qualify for finals in their respective age groups (Sloane, Alesha, Spencer, Isla, Nora,Taylor, Sophia, David, Brandon, Greg, Tristan) and also had 4 swimmers bring home medals including David (Gold), Brandon (Silver and 2 Bronze, Tristan (Bronze), and George (Gold, Silver, and Bronze).
Overall Brompton swimmers had 68 individual events and they came away with 25 lifetime bests, highlighted by Greg Finn (8 PB's) and Tristen Durteste (5 PB's) who both shattered their best times in every one of their swims.
While it was definitely a positive meet overall, some of the more frustrating results point to the fact that as swimmers grow and hit physical maturity the need for consistent long term training becomes more and more acute; you can no longer rely on talent alone and even the smallest gains in the pool are made after months of focused hard work. A positive approach to training and competition are also vital, and outside of the pool lifestyle and extracurricular choices can both positively and negatively effect performance.
