Great PBs for Woking Swimmers at Rother Round 1

Woking were hosts for the first round of the Rother League on Saturday night at Pool in the Park. This, the first of three rounds, saw Woking swimmers, aged from 10 to 30 years, compete for their club against Croydon, Winchester, Staines, Alton and Sutton and Cheam.

Winning swims came from both young and old as Ed Lee (19) and Alex Smith (28) brought home victories in the 50m fly and 50m free sprint events. They were joined by Alex Zalaf and Ben Smith to win the very competitive Open Men’s freestyle and medley relays. It was the youngest swimmers, however, who came through and shone on the night: Sadie Warmington stormed to a huge personal best time of 40.15sec in the Under 11yr Girls 50m backstroke, bringing another 1st position for Woking.  Sadie was joined by Eleanor Pollock, Evie MacKay and Kayah Gough  in both the Under 11 freestyle and medley relays, placing 2nd and 1strespectively.  The young Woking boys were keen to match the success of the girls and did not disappoint as Valerio Thompson, Leopold Tosch, Wolfgang Tosch and Alistair Walker stormed home to deliver another win for Woking in their relay.  Alex Tait, at still only 15 years, delivered a gutsy 50m freestyle sprint in the Open Girls age group, touching 2nd in a time of 28.52sec.  At the end of the night Winchester were clear winners of the first round and Woking placed 4th overall.

‘We were delighted with all of the swimmers tonight with many personal best swims’, stated Team Manager Olive Carroll, ‘especially our very youngest swimmers’. Always a tough decision but after much discussion, ‘Swimmers of the night’  were awarded to Sadie Warmington (10) and Alistair Walker (10) for their great personal best swims.  The team now awaits Round 2, to take place on 23rd June at The Spectrum in Guildford.
