LC Club Records Updated - and why SC training helps so much

Many thanks to Ernie McDade for updating the page on the webite for Club Records.  There have been some amazing swims - many many congratulations to swimmers, parents, and the current coaching team. 

Ernie has sent the following notes, and please read down the page for a message and some info sent by incoming Head Coach Noel Horton on the benefits of Short Course training (i.e. training in a 25m pool for 50m events) :-

  • Long Course (i.e. 50m pool) reords only updated this time round, following the completion of the SE Regional Championships and the meet at the London Aquatics Centre last month. 
  • 9 records in all since the last update.
  • Special congratulations to Gracie for taking the 200 breast LC open (i.e. all ages) record;  She also claims the 200IM  
  • Special congratulations to Charlotte (1500M) and Poppy (50 Fly) for claiming their first club records.  Poppy’s was an 11 year old record.  
  • Kenji broke several records in London including the 100 breast which was a 17 year old record;  The others were beating his own times.  
  • Congratulations to Elle for improving her 50 breast record.  
  • Last month, we sadly said goodbye to Sophie who was our top female current club record holder with an amazing 20 records.  Good luck Sophie in your future swimming career - we will proudly watch you continue to break records in future!  Gracie is now the top current female record holder with 19 records.


Message from Noel :
"As we know, Maxwell has a fine tradition of producing some of the fastest swimmers in the region. This is shown by continuing breaking of club records and showing the club moving forward with every season. A lot of the SC  (25m pool)  and LC  (50m pool) records currently being broken are or were held by ex international and national medalists. So it is no mean feat.  Congratulations to all!
Sometimes swimmers and their parents ask me whether they can expect to achieve their best times in a 50m pool when their day to day training takes place in a 25m pool.  I explain to them that the importance of short course training is prevalent more than anywhere today. Nations such as Australia, USA and Canada focus solely on short course training and competing for the majority of their season to emphasise skill focus and good habit retention (particularly in the age groups, but this is also seen heavily featured in the senior seasons).  For example, the USA have only just started competing long course in the last month!! Whereas we are competing long course in January in some regions!
The good habit retention is very important.  For example, a basic set like 30 x 100s can have two different effects depending on the pool length:
30 x 100 in a short course pool means:
1: sole focus on strokes per 25m
2: 90 turns are utilised
3: fatigue doesn’t affect stroke degradation
30 x 100 in a long course pool means:
1: bigger aerobic system being built
2: 30 turns are utilised
3: if swimmer isn’t fit enough, Stroke degradation can occur for half of the set meaning only 50% is being completed at quality!
I must stress that long course training is VERY important.  However it can only be beneficial if the swimmer is aerobically fit enough to maintain quality over the distance required.  Therefore the focus at age group level, and with short course training to emphasise and maximise the skill base, is imperative!! If this is achieved then the swimmer can further enhance their development with long course training.
Sometimes, less is more. But also sometimes less is more concentrated and beneficial."
