Report: British Summer Championships 2018
Ross Philp represented Staines Swimming Club with great distinction at the British Summer Championships held at Ponds Forge Sheffield. Swimming with the best swimmers in Great Britain Ross had to qualify for all events entered during the qualifying window between March and May. Only the best twenty-four swimmers in each age group were invited to compete.
Ross qualified for four events 200m Butterfly, 400m Individual Medley, 200m Individual Medley and 800m Freestyle.
The competition was held over six days with heats being held in the morning and finals in the afternoon/evening.
On day two Ross competed in the 200m Butterfly heats posting a personal best of 2.10.25 nearly a two second improvement from Regional Championships in May. This ranked Ross 7th and he qualified for his first ever British Championship final.
In the evening Ross went into the final with great confidence and swam an amazing personal best of 2.08.85 two seconds quicker than his heat time to finish a magnificent 6th in Great Britain.
On day three Ross competed in the 400m Individual Medley and posted a heat time and new personal best of 4.44.37, nearly a three second personal best from the time Ross posted in May. This qualified Ross 5th for his second British Championship final.
Later in the evening Ross went again with a second gruelling 400m swim. Improving on his heat time once again and posting another personal best Ross finished in 4.43.52 to secure another 6th place finish in the final.
On day five Ross competed in the heats of the 200m Individual Medley, posting a time just one hundredth of a second off this personal best in 2.13.80 to secure a 9th place finish and a third final appearance.
Just hours after swimming in the 200m Individual Medley Ross was once again on the blocks competing in the 800m Freestyle. After a steady start Ross really pushed himself on the second half of the race to swim really even splits (the most efficient way to race) to secure a personal best by just over three seconds finishing in 8.40.20. This placed Ross 10th overall which would be a finals position but lucky the event was heat declared winner.
In the evening session Ross swam his final race of the championship the 200m Individual Medley final. Ross went out strong giving everything in his final race and maintained his form to produce another outstanding personal best to finish 8th in 2.12.96.
Overall Ross improved on his entry rankings in every race and secured personal best heats to finals on every event which is an outstanding achievement.
Ross said “the increased double sessions during training, morning and evenings has really helped prepare me for this event and helped with final swims, I’m really pleased with how the week went”.
Ross alongside Ewan Taylor, Maya Brisco, Mitchell Coombs and Isabel Harry swim next week at English Nationals and the club has a dozen swimmers competing in the Welsh Development and Welsh Summer Open.
Good luck to all swimmers!
