MEDAL ON DAY 1: DAILY NEWS FROM THE ENGLISH NATIONALS

ENGLISH NATIONALS

Day 1 of the English Nationals and Holly Gardiner (18) and Matthew Ferguson (16) were the first Woking Swimmers to be back at Ponds Forge in Sheffield for the start of the English Nationals.

First up was Holly, swimming in the 100m breaststroke. Holly stormed down the first 50m, turning in a great split time of 35.71 seconds and then, as always, Holly picked up the pace in the second 50m to finish in a time of 1:16.56, not far from her recent PB and agonisingly close to a finals place in 11th position overall.  Disappointed to miss out on a final but a great swim to end the season.

Next up was Matthew (17 age group) in the 50m Freestyle, ‘Splash and Dash’ . A great start, solid breakout and base speed, meant Matthew was rewarded with a PB in a time of 24.23sec,and  second fastest through to the finals tonight.

All set for finals tonight!

Matthew, cheered on by team mate Kiera Heney, whose debut Nationals starts tomorrow, was well set seeded in second place in lane 5. A solid start saw Matthew neck and neck with the top seed and nothing separating them with only the final clock placing Matthew second in a huge PB time of 23.87 seconds.  The Silver medal made all the sweeter that both Alec, the winner by 0.1 second, and Matthew were faster than all bar one of the 17-year olds from last week’s British Nationals.  A great start to the week!

All set for Kiera’s debut tomorrow!
