SWIM ENGLAND SUMMER NATIONALS 2018 DAY 3

English Summer Nationals Day 3

With no one having to be at the pool first thing as the athletes were in mid-morning heats, the team gradually woke up, headed out for wake-up walks and made their way down to the pool.

Morning Heats

Izzy and Barry met for the 200IM warm up and discussed what areas to focus on.  Then, very soon Izzy was on the block and ready to race.  With a strong fly, Izzy worked hard on the back stroke, albeit with a small glide into the wall costing a little bit of time, before the Breast-stroke much improved from the evening before pulled her back into the race, leading into a decent last freestyle leg.  The finishing time was good and delivered Izzy with her second fastest swim ever and best heat swim to qualify for the final in 10th place, improving her ranking.

Following a solid week of training, a good time trial 9 days earlier and an awesome result of 5th in the 3k Open Water Championships, Miles was ready for the 800m.  Having been ready and pumped for a good 24 hours beforehand, the high energy was unleashed on the first 200m, turning in 2.09, as the race went on the pace was settling a second outside of what had been practiced, although Miles was working hard.  He achieved 2.20's for the next two splits and 2.21 on the last 200m.  The time was a 0.75% outside of his PB.  With great preparation and results going into this event, Miles and Barry will reflect on what will improve the result for the next major meet.  Miles enjoyable time in Sheffield and first trip away with the squad had come to an end, with lots of athletic traits learned and new friendships gained.

Evening Final

Izzy returned for the 200IM final and after practicing a couple of areas in the warm up was raring to go.  The race was the penultimate one of the evening and Izzy stood behind lane 9 ready to improve her ranking.

With a great start and a slightly different breathing pattern on fly Izzy turned on a similar split to the heat and worked down the back stroke to turn slightly quicker on this split.  The Breast-stroke was strong, leading into the biggest difference which was the freestyle, where Izzy in a head on head race situation with lane 8 went a second quicker than the heat.  The result was a quicker time than the heat and an impressive step up to 7th place. Great effort.

The evening meal was once again amazingly prepared by the McNamara's with a sweetcorn soup followed by Salmon or Chicken with Mediterranean vegetables.

Tomorrow see’s Robbie race in the 100m Back and Teagan and Izzy in the 1500m
