Lena Poulton crowned European Triathlon Champion in Glasgow

Lena ETU Champion

WDSC Master Lena Poulton won GOLD at the ETU Sprint Triathlon Championships at the Strathclyde Country Park last Saturday in the F45-49 age-group. Exiting first out of the water, Lena was untouchable on the bike and run, storming to an impressive victory.

The course is a real favourite with the elites and it was easy to see why; the very un-Scottish weather was also a bonus. The 750m swim in the lake was straightforward enough, but the 3-lap hilly 20km bike leg was a challenge, with one particularly steep ramp, dead-turns, fast descents and 90-degree corners. That put some hurt in the legs in time for the undulating 5km run.

Bionic Bev Childs graciously accepted her 4thplace in F60-64, having attacked on the swim and bike but not building quite enough of a lead to hold-off the chasers. Alan Harris placed a creditable 10th in M45-49 and by just 3 secs after a ding-dong battle over the last 1.5km and a head-to-head sprint to the line. WDSC Head Athletic Development & Physical Preparation Coach Gemma Elliott-Wetton was 22ndin F30-34 with some solid times in all three disciplines and a smile on her face.

Special mention to Team Poulton aka Ben, Tom, Jan and Luke for their very vocal support! And thanks to all the WDSC coaches for keeping us competitive in the water.
