Success at European Masters Championships 2018 in Slovenia

10 WDSC Masters headed for the beautiful country of Slovenia for the European Aquatics Championships Championship, which took place in the outdoor pool in Kranj, and at Lake Bled, between 1st and 9th September. This is the first time in the club’s history that so many of our masters have been to such a large international championship; taking part in 32 individual events and 3 relays.

As always we had a great team spirit, supporting each other in every event raced (the cow bell and flags ensured we made our presence felt!!) as well as cheering on the inspirational athletes in the older age groups – the 94 year old Bulgarian winning the 100m backstroke and getting a standing ovation was incredible to be a part of and brought tears to our eyes.

We all had some great swims and gave it our all in very competitive and challenging age-groups. The statistics speak for themselves: out of 35 swims in total, 12 were top 6 places and 23 were top 10. There were numerous PBs, 7 new club records, a British Masters age-group record (unofficial as yet), a bronze medal and a gold medal.

Huge thanks have to go to Dave Gee for pushing us all hard in training, aided by Patrick Ahern. We might not have liked it at times, but the hard work and belief has paid off.

Next weekend sees all our Masters compete at the Berks and South Bucks County Championships where we are hoping to retain our Top Club trophy.
