The Middlesex Development Camp took place on Sunday 16th September at Barnet Copthall with 34 swimmers from 14 different clubs from across the county in attendance. There were 4 coaching staff, Rick Hall (Hackney), Rob Crofts (Harrow), Rebecca Newsome (Teddington) and Craig Gibbons (Natare) along with Yoga teacher Dani Cox.
This year we also had 6 development coaches from clubs who were able to observe and get involved in the sessions. These were Tony (Hackney), Tom (Camden), Katia (Chelsea), AK (Barnet), Lisa (LB Hounslow) and Felipe (Ealing)
The aim of the camp was to give 11 year olds from across the county the opportunity to come together and experience their first taste of the national talent pathway. The camp consisted of 2x 90 minute swim sessions, a land training session, yoga and a talk from Paralympic Gold Medallist, Ellie Simmonds.
The main focus throughout the swim sessions was reinforcing great skills and technique, especially streamlining and turns. The swimmers also worked on front crawl efficiency. The land training focus was on key movement skills such as forward rolls and mobility exercises.
In the afternoon the yoga gave swimmers the opportunity to do a slightly different activity with many of them never doing it before. Before the Yoga, swimmers were treated to an inspiring talk by Ellie Simmonds who spoke about her career, showed her Paralympic medals and races and gave the youngsters the chance to ask questions and get autographs.
