2018 Winter short course national championships- Ponds Forge

Nova Centurion Swimming Club were well represented at the 2018 winter short course national championships held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield on 14-16 December. 

Individual Medal winners:

Freya Colbert 14yrs again demonstrated her talent by having a fantastic winter national championships. At only 14yrs of age Freya was competing against swimmers up to the age of 15 in the Junior Championships category but came away with an impressive 3 x Junior Gold, 1 x Junior Silver and 1 x Junior Bronze medals. Freya finished in an impressive 6th place out of all the Open Age competitors in the 800m Freestyle event with a time of 8.35.78 which saw her win the first of her Junior Gold medals. Freya qualified in 10th place overall for the final of the 400m Freestyle event but improved her time to finish in 7th place in the final with a time of 4.12.93 and win the Junior Gold medal in the process. Freya finished 12th in the heats of the 400m Individual Medley to qualify for the B final  where she finished in 1st position in a time of 4.40.28 to win her third Junior Gold medal. Freya also qualified for the B final in the 100m Freestyle in a time of 56.43 and finished 6th in that final to win the Junior Silver medal. Freya then finished 15th in the heats of the 200m Individual Medley in a time of 2.16.47 to reach the B final where she finished in 8th place in a slightly slower time but still secured the Junior Bronze medal. Freya also finished in 22nd place overall in the Open Age 200m Freestyle event. 

Polly Holden 19yrs continued her fine form by winning the Open Age Senior Silver medal in the 800m Freestyle event in a time of 8.28.02. Polly then qualified for the final of the 400m Freestyle in 4th place and in the final improved her time to win the Bronze medal in a time of 4.07.32. Polly also qualified for the 200m Freestyle A final and finished in 10th pace in a time of 2.00.01.

Joseph Kingsland 15yrs was the third Nova swimmer to win an individual medal at these national championships. Joseph finished 24th out of all competitors in the 1500m Freestyle event in a time of 15.58.07 which won him the Junior Silver medal as the 2nd placed 15yrs or younger swimmer. Joseph also finished 46th overall in the 400m Individual Medley and 59th overall in the 400m Freestyle events.

Individual Finalists:

Courteney Price 20yrs qualified in 6th place overall for the A final in the 50m Backstroke event with a time of 28.24 and finished 8th in the final with a slightly slower time. Courteney qualified for the A final in the 200m Backstroke and improved her heat time to finish in 6th place in the final with a time of 2.08.71. Courteney also qualified for the A final of the 100m Backstroke where she improved her heat time to finish 8th in a time of 1.00.42.

Mollie Wright 20yrs finished in 8th place overall in the 800m Freestyle event with a time of 8.42.46. Mollie then qualified in 13th place for the B team final of the 400m Freestyle where she improved her heat swim time to finish in 2nd place in the B final in a time of 4.13.77. Mollie also qualified for the B final of the 400m Individual Medley where she improved her heat time to finish 3rd in a time of 4.45.27. 

Michael Rees 18yrs qualified for the A final of the 400m Individual Medley with a heat swim time of 4.24.05 but he was unable to improve on this and finished in 9th place. Michael also finished 17th overall in the heats of 200m Backstroke to reach the B final where he improved his heat time to finish 9th in a time of 2.00.71.

Cira Fletcher 20yrs qualified for the B final in the 200m Breaststroke and improved her heat time to finish in 6th place in that final with a time of 2.31.21. Cira also finished 20th overall in the heats of the 100m Breaststroke to reach the B final where she improved her heat time slightly to finish 9th in a time of 1.10.22.

Joseph Sadler 15yrs finished 19th overall in the heats of 50m Freestyle in a time of 24.35 to reach the B final where he finished in 9th place in a slightly slower time. He then finished 51st in the 100m Butterfly event. Joseph then finished 42nd in the 400m Freestyle event. Joseph then finished 32nd in the 100m Freestyle event and 40th in the 200m Freestyle event.

Other Individual Qualifiers:

Livia KIngsland 13yrs finished in 23rd place overall in the 800m Freestyle event which is outstanding given her young age and she also finished 44th overall in the 400m Individual Medley. 

Emma Erskine 14yrs finished 25th overall in 200m Butterfly, 28th in the 800m Freestyle event, 35th in the 400m Individual Medley, 39th in the 200m Backstroke and 66th in the 100m Backstroke events.

Rachel Cox 19yrs finished 32nd in the 100m Freestyle.

Aron Preece 19yrs finished 36th in the 400m Individual Medley event

Joshua Harris 17yrs finished 37th overall in the 400m Individual Medley and 44th in 200m Backstroke.

Liam Dawson 13yrs finished in 39th place overall in the 1500m Freestyle and 76th in the 400m Individual Medley events.

Merewyn Jones 14yrs finished in 48th place overall in the 200m Breaststroke event.

Joshua Skinner 15yrs finished 51st overall in the 400m Freestyle, 54th in the 100m Backstroke and 63rd in the 200m Backstroke events. 

Andrew Hall 15yrs finished 51st overall in the 200m Freestyle, 54th in the 1500m Freestyle, 57th in the 400m Freestyle and 60th in the 400m Individual Medley events.

Heidi Marriott 13yrs competing in her first national championships did superb to finish in 82nd place overall in the 200m Backstroke event.

Team Relay events:

In the womens 4 x 100m Freestyle relay Nova's team comprising of Polly Holden, Freya Colbert, Courteney Price and Rachel Cox qualified for the final and improved their heat time to finish in 5th place overall with a time of 3.48.43. However they were the 3rd fastest English team and so won the Team Bronze medal.

In the womens 4 x 50m Medley relay event Nova's team comprising of Courteney Price, Cira Fletcher, Molly Colbert and Rachel Cox qualified for the final in a time of 1.56.77 and in the final finished in 7th place.   

In the womens 4 x 50m Freestyle relay Nova's team of Polly Holden, Freya Colbert, Rachel Cox and Courteney Price qualified for the final and finished in 8th place in a time of 1.46.95.

In the mens 4 x 50m Freestyle relay event Nova's team comprising of Joseph Sadler, Michael Rees, Aron Preece and Andrew Hall finished in 13th place with a time of 1.38.33.

In the mens 4 x 100m Freestyle relay event Nova's team comprising of Aron Preece, Joseph Sadler, Michael Rees and Andrew Hall qualified for the final and finished in 8th place unable to match their heat time swim of 3.32.21.

In a mixed mens and womens 4 x 50m Medley relay event where the 4 swimmers ages added together could not be greater than 68 Nova's team comprising of Courteney Price, Freya Colbert, Michael Rees and Joseph Sadler qualified for the final and finished in 10th place.
