British Championships April 2019

Freya Colbert (15yrs) selected to represent GB at European Junior Swimming Championships in Russia

The British Swimming Championships 2019 were hotly contested at the Tollcross International pool, Glasgow between 16/04/2019 and 21/04/2019.

These Championships were also used to select a number of GB squads for upcoming international competitions and these squads were announced on Friday 26th April 2019. Nottinghamshire Nova Centurion swimmer Freya Colbert (15yrs) performances in the pool over the week of competition earned her a well deserved place on the Great Britain squad that will be competing in the European Junior Swimming Championships taking place in Kazan, Russia in July 2019.

Freya was one of 9 Nova swimmers that qualified for the British Championships where there were 3 finals for the majority of the events. The top 8 swimmers in each event competing in the Open final, the next top 8 swimmers aged 23yrs or under competing in the Transition final and the next top 8 junior swimmers competing in the Junior finals.

Freya Colbert was Nova's top performer at the British Championships and competed in no fewer than 6 different events. Freya reached an Open final and 2 Transition finals which is incredible given she was one of the youngest swimmers competing. Freya finished 6th in the 400m Freestyle Open final with a new Personal Best time of 4.17.09. Freya also won the Transition final of the 400m Individual Medley with another new Personal Best time of 4.48.41. Freya also finished 5th in her other Transition final in the 200m Individual Medley with a new Personal Best time set in the heats of this event of 2.18.24. Freya's other events saw her finish 11th in the Open age group 800m Freestyle event, 14th in the Junior 200m Freestyle event and 19th in the Junior 100m Freestyle event. To achieve results such as these for a swimmer so young demonstrates the potential Freya has and her call up to the GB European Junior squad is just reward for all her hard work in the training pool.

The only other female Nova swimmer qualifying for a final at these British Championships was Mollie Wright 21yrs who finished 7th in the Transition final of the 400m Individual Medley event.

The top male Nova swimmer was Michael Rees 19yrs who qualified for 2 Transition finals from the 3 events he contested.
