East Midlands Championships: Gala 2

Gala 2 of the 2019 East Midlands Swimming Championships was contested on Monday 6th May 2019 at the 50m Ponds Forge International Pool, Sheffield.  

Swimmers aged 14yrs and above that had achieved the tough qualification times competed in the 50m sprint events as well as the Open age group qualifiers for the Girls 800m Freestyle and the Boys 1500m Freestyle events.  

In addition there were junior and senior 4 x 200m Freestyle relay team events contested that will establish which teams from Regional competitions should go forward to the British Summer Championships to be held later this year in Scotland. 

The Nova Centurion relay teams all did extremely well. All 3 of Nova's A teams won Gold medals and their one B team in the Boys junior competition finished 5th. 

The Boys junior A team comprising of swimmers 14-16yrs of age namely, Joseph Sadler, Andrew Hall, Joshua Skinner and Joseph Kingsland won Gold medals in their relay event in a winning time of 7.57.68. They won a very tight race by just under 1 second from the Derventio team that included a 14yr old swimmer who recently smashed the fastest ever time in the world by a 14yr old for 100m Freestyle. 

The Girls junior team comprising of swimmers 14-16yrs of age namely, Freya Colbert, Chloe Quinn, Livia Kingsland and Kate Morris won Gold medals in their relay event in a winning time of 8.35.72. This team were some 12 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals Northampton. 

The Girls senior team comprising of swimmers 17yrs and over namely, Courteney Price, Rebecca Flisher, Mollie Wright and Molly Colbert won Gold medals in their relay event in a winning time of 8.26.77, This team were an impressive 14 seconds clear of their nearest rivals Loughborough University. 

Once again the swimmers representing Nottinghamshire Nova Centurion at this competition did extremely well and came away with an impressive haul of 8 Gold, 8 Silver and 7 Bronze individual medals.

The top Nova girl swimmer on the day was Freya Colbert winning 2 Gold medals who demonstrated that her fine form continues following her recent successes at the British Swimming Championships. 

There were 4 Nova boy swimmers all claiming 1 Gold medal each namely Oliver Silver, Liam Dawson, Joseph Kingsland and Michael Rees but Tom Trueman deserves special mention for reaching sprint finals in 3 out of the 4 available strokes and winning medals in each of his finals coming home with 1 x Silver and 2 x Bronze medals for his efforts.    

In total 19 Nova swimmers came home with at least 1 medal for their efforts at these championships and a further 14 swimmers qualified for at least 1 sprint final by finishing in the top 10 in each event. .

Medal Winners

Freya Colbert (15yrs) (2,0,0) won Gold in the 15yrs 800m Freestyle event in a time of 8.52.82 which currently ranks her 1st in her age group for the British Summer Championships by a margin of over 12 seconds. Freya also won Gold in the 15yrs 50m Backstroke final in a time of 31.05. 

Cira Fletcher (21yrs) (1,0,0) won Gold in the 17yrs and over 50m Breaststroke final in a time of 33.36. Cira also finished 5th in the 17yrs and over 50m Freestyle final. 

Mollie Wright (21yrs) (1,0,0) won Gold in the 17yrs and over 800m Freestyle in a time of 9.01.59. Mollie also finished 8th in the 17yrs and over 50m Freestyle final. 

Oliver Silver (13yrs) (1,0,0) won Gold in the 13yrs 1500m Freestyle event in a time of 18.37.96. 

Liam Dawson (14yrs) (1,0,0) won Gold in the 14yrs 1500m Freestyle event in a time of 16.44.78.

Joseph Kingsland (16yrs) (1,0,0) won Gold in the 16yrs 1500m Freestyle event in a time of 16.23.98.

Michael Rees (19yrs) (1,0,0) won Gold in the 17yrs and over 50m Backstroke final in a time of 27.46.

Tom Trueman (15yrs) (0,1,2) won Silver in the 15yrs 50m Butterfly final. Tom also won Bronze in the 15yrs 50m Freeestyle final. Tom finished an excellent day by winning his 3rd sprint medal of the day by claiming the Bronze in the 15yrs 50m Backstroke final.  

Joshua Skinner (16yrs) (0,1,1) won Silver in the 16yrs 1500m Freestyle event. Joshua also won a Bronze medal in the 16yrs 50m Backstroke final. 

Evie Johnson (12yrs) (0,1,0) won Silver in the 11/12yrs 800m Freestlyle event.

Livia Kingsland (14yrs) (0,1,0) won Silver in the 14yrs 800m Freestyle event. 

Kallum Quirke (13yrs) (0,1,0) won Silver in the 13yrs 1500m Freestyle event. 

Elliot Sibley (14yrs) (0,1,0) won Silver in the final of the 14yrs 50m Breaststroke final.

Emma Erskine (15yrs) (0,1,0) won Silver in the 15yrs 50m Backstroke final. 

Courteney Price (21yrs) (0,1,0) won Silver in the 17yrs and over 50m Backstroke final. 

Kyle Merryweather (15yrs) (0,0,1) won Bronze in he 15rs 50m Butterfly final. Kyle also finished 5th in the 15yrs 50m Freestyle final. 

Rebecca Flisher (17yrs) (0,0,1) won Bronze in the 17yrs and over 800m Freestyle event. 

Alfie Silver (13yrs) (0,0,1) won Bronze in the 13yrs 1500m Freestyle event.

Kate Morris (14yrs) (0,0,1) won Bronze in the 14yrs 50m Backstroke final. Kate also finished 4th in the 14yrs 50m Butterfly final. 

Sarah Holmes (14yrs) finished 4th in the final of the 14yrs 50m Backstroke final and 6th in the 14yrs 50m Freestyle final.   

Joseph Sadler (16yrs) finished 5th in the 16yrs 50m Butterfly final and 7th in the 16yrs 50m Freestyle final. 

Charlie Canavan (14yrs) finished 5th in the 14yrs 50m Breaststroke final. 

Gabriel Oyaide-Nicholl (16yrs) finished 5th in the 16yrs 50m Breaststroke final. 

Jessica Reed (15yrs) finished 5th in the 15yrs 50m Freestyle final.

Luke Derivan (15yrs) finished 6th in the 15yrs 50m Breaststroke final. 

Talitha Oud (14ys) finished 6th in the 14yrs 50m Butterfly final. 

Chloe Quinn (16yrs) finished 6th in the 16yrs 50m Freestyle final. 

Thomas White (17yrs) finished 7th in the 17yrs and over 50m Breaststroke final. 

Ellie Ward (20yrs) finsihed 7th in the 17yrs and over 50m Breaststroke final. 

Olivia Barrett (14yrs) finished 8th in the 14yrs 50m Breaststroke final. 

Callum Peel (15yrs) finished 9th in the 15yrs 50m Breaststroke final.

Emily Morris (14yrs) finished 9th in the 14yrs 50m Butterfly final.

Max Davies (14yrs) finished 10th in the 14yrs 50m Backstroke final. 

The Nova Centurion coaching team were once again delighted with the progress being made in the pool at these Championships.
