South West Regional Summer Championships Report
Weekend 3: 18th & 19th May 2019
After our successes in the pool in Plymouth and Bristol, the team were up and ready for another weekend of racing. For the third and final weekend the Regional Summer Championships took place in Millfield’s 50 metre pool. The weather wasn’t as hot and sunny however, there was lots to celebrate so, read on…..
Session 1: Saturday - Heats
The first event of the morning was the Girls 200m Freestyle which saw Betsy (13 years) swimming a nice PB with Molly (14 years) swimming a Season Best time.
The Boys 100m Breaststroke, produced some impressive PB’s from Freddie, Xavi, Jack and Arron (11 /12 years). Freddie’s time earned him a place in the final with the 3rd fastest time along with Luca (4th fastest time) and Xavi (7th fastest time). In the 13 years Age Group Liam swam a Long Course PB which was great to see. Our 14 year old Boys also put in some impressive times with Alex swimming a 3 second PB and just missing out on a place in the final as he finished 9th.
In the Girls 50m Butterfly Abigail, Lilly, Tilly Betsy and Sheila all swam PB’s. Betsy’s swim was superb and it earned her a place in the final later in the day. Our most successful event of the morning was the Boys 400m Individual Medley which produced some big PB’s from Luca and Arron (11/12 years) and Charlie M (13 years). Ryan (14 years) swam another Long Course PB in this event and narrowly missed out on a top 3 place with a brave and determined swim. Luca’s time of 5:31.65 earned him our first GOLD medal of the day and was 9 seconds faster than the time he set just 4 weeks ago which set us up brilliantly for the morning finals….
Session 1 – Finals
Our first final of the morning was the 11/12 years 100m Breaststroke and with 3 boys in this final, we were well represented. Freddie managed to step up on his heat time swimming 1:23.34 and finished 4th. Luca finished 5th (no mean feat having just swum the 400m IM) and Xavi finished 7th.
Our only girl’s finalist of the morning saw Betsy step up by a second with a really determined swim in the Girls 13 years 50m Butterfly final. Betsy’s improvement in the final came about through her listening to the feedback she received from Coach Jan as she kept her rhythm going and spotted the wall perfectly on her finish. Her time of 31.31 gained her 5th place and also a new 13 years CLUB RECORD. Great swimming Betsy!
Session 2: Saturday – Heats
More success came in the pool in the afternoon session as we looked forward to: the Boys 100m Butterfly; the Girls 50m Freestyle; the Boys 200m Backstroke and the Girls 200m Breaststroke. The eagerly awaited Boys 100m Butterfly produced a host of PB’s from: Dan A-S, Arron and Xavi (11/12 years); Max (13 years) and Ryan, Ethan, Charlie R and Alex (14 years). The event also produced a good number of finalists with Luca (11/12 years) and Alex (14 years) going into the final ranked 2nd and Arron (11/12 years) ranked 7th. Alex’s heat time of 1:03.05 gave him a 0.72 second PB which pushes him up the rankings as he is looking to swim this event at British Nationals in the summer.
Next came the Girls 50m Freestyle which again produced a stack of PB’s from Abigail and Lilly (11/12 years); Betsy (13 years) and Sheila (14 years). Abigail’s time earned her a “swim off” place which she managed to win in a time of 31.16. Sheila’s time put her into the final where she knew she would have to step up if she wanted to gain a podium place.
The ensuing boy’s event was the 200m Backstroke. In the 11/12 years Age Group Jamie put in a fantastic swim to earn himself a PB in this event. Other PB’s came from Ollie in the 14 years category. Finalist places were earned by Max and Zack (13 years) and also Ryan and Fin (14 years) and all of these boys swam PB’s which was great to see. The final heat of the session was the Girls 200m Breaststroke which saw Lilly swim a good race to merit another PB.
Session 2: Saturday - Finals
The afternoon finals kicked off with the Boys 11/12 years 100m Butterfly. For the second time in a day Luca gained himself a GOLD medal in a closely fought race. In the process, Luca almost gave his coaches and supporters heart failure as he choked on some water in the last 15 metres of the race however he managed to hang on to win. In the same race Arron finished a very creditable 7th place. In the 14 years final Alex just missed out on the touch and was placed 4th. Although Alex admitted to being disappointed that he missed out on a medal, he will have a lot to take away from the experience of swimming in such a high level race where all four of the top finishers are at British National level. Our next finalist was Sheila in the 14 years 50m Freestyle. This was such a close race with just one second splitting the whole final. Sheila finished 5th with an improvement of 0.2 seconds on her heat time and she just needs to “spot” her finish to improve still further.
The last couple of finals included Max and Zack (13 years) and Ryan and Fin (14 years) 200m Backstroke. Max managed to improve his heat time finishing 4th and Zack came 6th. Ryan also improved on his heat time coming 6th and Fin finished 8th and it was great to see so many boys in the finals of this event.
So that was it for Saturday and everyone headed home for a well-deserved rest.
And so the final day of the Championships which is always eagerly anticipated….
Session 3: Sunday - Heats
Here we go….
Sunday morning kicked off with the ever popular Boys 200m IM and a surfeit of PB’s from Xavi and Arron (11/12 years); Charlie M (13 years) and Ryan and Fin (14 years). Finalists for this event included Luca (ranked 2nd) in the 11/12 years and Ryan (ranked 7th) in the 14 years.
The next event, the Girls 50m Backstroke, produced more PB’s from Abigail, Jess and Lucy (11/12 years) and Betsy (13 years) with Lilly and Lilia just outside their best times.
The Boys 100m Freestyle also proved to be exciting with even more PB’s coming from Freddie (11/12 years); Max, Charlie and Zack (13 years) and Fin (14 years). Max put in a well-paced best ever swim to put him into the final with the fastest time recorded as he dipped under the 1 minute mark for the first time ever. Other impressive times came from Dan, Charlie R, Ryan and Alex. So, once again, there was much for the coaching team to look forward to in the finals.
Session 3: Sunday – Finals
The first final of the morning was the Boys 11/12 years 200m IM. Luca impressed his coach by stepping up on his heat time to win a SILVER medal in the process with a 2 second improvement. In the 14 years Age Group Ryan also improved on his ranking and heat time coming 5th. Shortly afterwards Max raced in the final of the Boys (13 years) 100m freestyle final. This was a wonderfully contested race that Max led from start to finish leaving his competitors in his wake to win GOLD as he swam a best ever time of 59.32. Boys – you did us all proud!
Session 4: Sunday – Heats
And so, with the team still buzzing we looked ahead to the final session of this year’s Championships. Three of our girls swam the 11/12 years 100m Butterfly and it was impressive to see all three of them swimming PB’s. Great work and well done to Lilly, Jess and Abigail. In the 13 years Age Group both Betsy and Tilly made it through to the final in 4th and 5th place respectively and this promised to be an exciting final with hardly anything between them.
The Boys 50m Freestyle was another exciting event with a surplus of PB’s coming from Luca and Freddie (11/12 years); Zack, Charlie M and Max (13 years) and Charlie R and Ryan (14 years). Luca’s time was good enough to put him into the final in 2nd place and Max went one better by qualifying 1st and so, this looked like being a productive afternoon. The girls 200m Backstroke was a quieter event with Lilly and Lilia both delivering PB’s and well swum races. In the final event which was the boys 200m Breaststroke, PB’s were swum by Jack, Xavi and Freddie with both Freddie (ranked 3rd) and Xavi (ranked 6th) making it through to the afternoon finals
And so to the Sunday finals…… The event we all looked forward to was the “battle of the girls” between Tilly and Betsy in the final of the 13 years 100m Butterfly. Girls, you didn’t disappoint us and you both gave us a fantastic race with Tilly taking the BRONZE medal and swimming another PB in the process. Betsy also swam a huge PB to gain a highly commendable 5th place. Watching the girls in this event must have inspired Luca as he too swam a PB to finish 2nd in the Boys 11/12 years 50m Freestyle and take home a SILVER medal. Going one better Max stepped up onto the blocks and swam a brilliant 50m Freestyle race to win GOLD in a New CLUB RECORD time. His time of 26.98 beat the 13 year old record time set by Dan Speers in 2010. Fantastic swimming Max!
The session finished with the Boys 200m Breaststroke final where Freddie B swam another Long Course PB to win BRONZE and Xavi J finished in 7th place.
So, that was it…. What a final session! As commented in the report last week, there was so much to look forward to this weekend and we really did finish on a high with so many medals and PB’s. In closing, huge thanks go to our swimmers and their parents for all their dedication and commitment. A final thank you must also go to our poolside team: Coach Jan; Coach Chris; Coach Becky; Coach Phil and Team Managers Lisa and Claire for their hard work this weekend in nurturing and supporting our swimmers.
