Southern Junior League Round 1 2019

Southrn Junior League Round 1

Saturday night saw the PSC Southern Junior League Team fired up and ready to race in Round 1 of 3, the first outing for team this time was hosted at Weymouth. After a final team practice at Ferndown, Coach Jan felt confident that the  swimmers’ evident team spirit would lead to a great night of racing. This was borne out by strong performances from the outset, in a challenging first round draw for us against the 2018 SJL League winners, Swim Bournemouth.

Well done to our newcomers in the team and PSC debuts in SJL:

9 yrs: Rosie P; Tamsin B; Louise C; Isabella G; Nathan D; Mason E; Samuel E; Noah R; Roberta B

10 yrs: Beatrice R; Erin M; Sebastian Z; Oscar L

11 yrs: Freya C; Abigail S; Freddie B; William W

12 yrs: Lilly D

The results were “nail-bitingly close throughout”, and “very exciting racing to watch”, as described by one PSC swim parent. After 13 events, there were only 3 points separating Poole in 1st place and SB in 2nd, with 72 and 69 points respectively.

After 25 events, the announcer let slip that the lead had changed, with SB briefly overtaking Poole with 133 points to our 130, but after 40 events, Poole had come back strongly to regain the lead by one single point. This made for a decibel-raising round of relays, where the cheering from poolside and the gallery alike spurred our teams on to smash out a convincing overall win.

The FINAL points scores after all 49 events:

PSC 1st with 264 points (WOOHOO!)

SB 2nd 241 points; Seagulls 3rd 144 points; Weymouth 4th 140 points; South Dorset 5th 120 points; Yeovil 6th 107 points

A breakdown of the results, by Coach Jan, further demonstrates the strength of this year’s SJL team, with 29 x 1st place; 15 x 2nd place; 3 x 3rd place; 2 x 5th place and - no doubt motivated by the fantastically rousing team cheering - a massive 23 x Short course PBs

Notable swims and PBs came from the following swimmers:

Freestyle: Roberta B; Dan AS; Nathan D(all 50’s)

Fly: Louise C 25 fly; Luca S 50 fly; Lilly D 50 fly

Breaststroke: Freddie B 50 brst; Martha M 50 brst; Chris B 50 brst

Jan would like to thank all the PSC coaches and the team for making a big effort on technical focus, resulting in zero DQs  for Poole, which is always a bonus in SJL.

The most exciting news is that Poole has been placed TOP, out of all 23 teams in the region, with 974 points, after collating all results from the 4 galas of Round 1. J ust ahead of Plymouth in 2nd and neighbours Swim Bournemouth in 3rd.  Against this bigger clubs no one can rest on thier laurels and now is the time to train harder and smarter than ever before if we are to retain the lead.

We can now really look forward to the 2nd Round on 13th July, the draw for which is eagerly awaited. Swimmers: Please keep the evening free – It promises to be a great night of racing.

Date for the diary – Final Round is on 14th September.

We leave you with a rallying call from Coach Jan:

“Can we make the ‘A’ final again? – I sincerely hope so after this performance!”

Let’s go Poole!
