Staines SC Win in second round of the Rother League

 
HANTS AND SOUTH COAST SWIMMING LEAGUE 2019

 

Staines Swimming Club blasted its way to the top of the Rother League Division 1 table with just one round to go in September after an emphatic team display at Woking in the second round of the Hants and South Coast League.

The team romped to victory winning by a margin of 13 points to secure first place over a very strong Sutton and Cheam team.

A relay format gala randomly saw two individual events being swum the 14 years and under 100m IM. Both events were dominated by Staines Swimmers with P2’s Mae Hunt (1.13.90) and Marcel Chodnicki (1.08.36) winning by significant margins.

The team showed great consistency throughout the event notching up fourteen 1st place, twenty six 2nd place and seven 3rd place finishes, with swimmers finishing in the top three for 47 out of the 51 events.

There were some outstanding displays on the night; national qualifiers Ross “Powerhouse” Philp and Danny “Dobby” Pearson blasted their way to first place in the men’s open 2 X 50m Breaststroke in a time of 1.02.86 with splits of 31.98 and 30.88 respectively and the men’s open 2 X 50m Backstroke with splits of 29.43 and 27.97.

Thirteen year olds Toby Bujakowski and Marcel Chodnicki followed up the impressive Breaststroke swimming winning the U14 boys 2 X 25m event in 33.04 with splits of 17.40 and 15.64.

The U12 girls and boys teams of; Charlotte Heyden, Mia Golding, Alicia Irwin and Gabriela Chodnicki,  Lucas Iweanya, Oliver Wells, Freddie Golding and Alfie Lawrence dominated their age groups winning all four  4 X 25m events, Freestyle and Medley. The U12’s also came in the top two places for all 2 X 25m races on all four strokes showing excellent improvement.

The final event and the loudest supported on the night was the 8 x 25m freestyle squadron with one swimmer girl/boy from each age group. Staines lead from the start with a strong first two legs from Alicia Irwin and Freddie Golding, Sutton and Cheam slowly caught up but didn’t have enough with experienced Staines swimmers bringing the team home in veteran Ruth Scalan and P1’s Ross Philp.

Staines also entered a second team into the competition this year allowing for greater participation and development of the clubs swimmers. The team took part at Guildford in Division 2 West with many youngsters swimming in a club gala for the first or second time. The team finished a creditable 6th with many personal bests secured. Results from this gala will be posted shortly.
