February 2020 Newsletter

February 2020

Message from Dimitri, Chairman

February is a busy month with the Surrey Counties and I am thrilled to see the club full on and clocking some great times and swims already, well done to all swimmers! Its also the month for our financial year end, and the committee and I are busy planning and budgeting for the next season. Lots of exciting things to come which will be communicated in due time. In the meantime, I wish (us) all the best after the official exit from the EU and hope that minimum disruption, yet maximum growth is achieved in the market. Happy February!

If you have any questions or comments, you can contact me or any member of the committee or by email. Our contact details can be found on the FSC website and via this link Committee members.

Message from Sean, Head Coach

What a start to the new decade! We have smashed into 2020!

We finished 2019 with a successful end of training cycle meet at Wycombe, coupled with an epic Arena league performance and a ‘Masters vs Kids’ gala that I will never forget. All in all a great way to close 2019. We then had the Christmas break where training resumed with a boom, attendance being at an all time high.

With the extra commitment from all, we attacked the first weekend of the Surrey County Champs with style and had one of the most successful weekends in FSC’s history and it was fantastic to be a part of it. With two weekends still to go I urge all qualifiers to keep pushing over the coming weeks.  To finish at the Olympic Park with the 50m races and the relays will be a truly amazing weekend for all involved.

If you are not in the line up for Surrey County Champs this year please don’t worry, I deliberately added the Hart Level 3 meet the weekend after for all non qualifiers. Please remember if you have done all weekends at the Surrey County Champs and have also entered Hart you will have done a lot of racing, so take this opportunity to focus on your weaker events or anything you are extremely close to Regional qualification on.

All in all the programme is going from strength to strength and I am loving the vibe and buzz around the club at present. Everyone is supporting each other and working really hard. With this in mind I want to thank the coaches supporting and underpinning the programme in my absence when I am at meets.  Ultimately they are the central cogs that keep everything going on a day to day basis. Behind the scenes there is also a team of voluntary support without which we certainly wouldn’t have made the progress we have this season -  so thank you to all the coaches and volunteers.

At the beginning of the year the squad realignments caused a slight boost in numbers in key areas. This now seems to be settling down, however, there are a few busy patches still, which the team and I are monitoring closely.

Finally, an update on recruitment. I am hoping to make an official announcement within the coming days. A special thanks to Dimitri and Nic for all their efforts here, as this process, as I am sure you can appreciate is never straight forward.

The future continues to look very promising indeed, so please keep up the hard work and most importantly continue to enjoy swimming as a sport. You all have long journeys ahead. Counties is the first step on the ladder though, so everyone's confidence and determination should be at an all time high. If you just missed out this year, turn that into positive motivation to try and get the time for next year early (end of this season) to take the pressure off when we return after the summer break. Everyone has something to aim for always. If you are not sure or feeling down please do take the time to talk to a member of the team, we are all here to help.

The saying of the week is:

#raise the bar #what bar? At FSC there isn’t one. :) LETS GO FARNHAM LETS GO!

Masters

Twelve Farnham Swimming Club masters travelled to Crawley for the South-East Regional Masters Long Course event and returned with a 17-medal haul.

Newcomer Alex Veal swam superbly clocking excellent times in the 100m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke events. Alex only took to master swimming a year ago, having never been part of a club, even as a child. Alex, dad to two younger Farnham Swimming Club members, said after his events “It was tough but I really enjoyed pushing myself. The support and encouragement from the group has been amazing.”

Bryony Sherlow , returning to competition after a 3 year break, achieved her personal goal of qualifying for the British Championship in June. It was great to see Bryony back in the water for the first session. She spent the rest of the weekend officiating at the event.

Paul Davis , gave up his Saturday lie in to join the team with just 24 hours notice after one of the team members pulled out through illness. Super Sub Davis stepped in to help the relay team finsh in third and fourth places. Davis shared the team award for Swimmer of the Meet (I Love my Coach T Shirt) with Jo Painell who also stepped in to fill the gaps in the relays.

Nick Rusz is off to the European Masters in Budapest having swum the qualifying times in both the 50m and 100m Fly. Impressive final medal tally for Nick– 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.

Debbie Addison  – 1 silver

Janine Brooks – 1 gold, 2 silver

Caroline Butterwick – 1 bronze

Andrea Coombs – 2 silver

Paul Davis – 1 bronze

Jo Painell – 1 Silver

Nick Rusz – 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze

Mike Shaw – 2 bronze

Alex Veal – 1 bronze

Judith Wiles – 1 Silver

It’s not just about the medals, there were a lot of personal best times achieved, goals met and qualifying times for both the European and British Masters events later in the year. Well done everyone!

The Bracknell meet on 7th March has now closed for individual events but we are putting together relays if anybody wanting to still swim. Details on Surrey Masters June will follow soon.
