The Tornadoes of South Dorset took a young team of 14 swimmers to the 2020 County Championships held at Littledown, where they produced an impressive 39 personal best times, reached 10 finals, recorded 2 regional times and picked up 2 gold and 2 silver medals.
The 2 standout swimmers over the championships were Holly Kearns, who recorded personal best times for all her events, reached 4 finals and achieved a regional consideration time in the 50m breaststroke and Ellissia Walburn, who reached 2 finals, took silver in the 200m butterfly for her age group and was 3rd overall in the Junior age group. Ellissia also picked up a regional consideration time in the 100m butterfly and a regional qualification time in the 200m butterfly. Ellisia came 4th in the 400 individual medley.
Luke O’Dowd recorded a personal best time in the 50m freestyle and took gold in the 200m individual medley, silver in the 50 freestyle and silver in the 100m freestyle in the combined para events.
Beth Firth, Emily Hanger and Maisie Birch all recorded personal best times and reached finals while Sophie Marsh narrowly missed out on a place in the final of the 100 backstroke following an exciting swim off with another competitor who had recorded an identical time for the event in the heats.
Maisie Corbridge, Caitlin English, Rudy Falconer, Izzy King and Heidi Olson all picked up personal best times over the 2 weekends.
Tornadoes Lead Coach, Ian Hooper said ‘I am delighted with how well our swimmers have performed at the County Championships this year, especially with such a young and developing squad. The swimmers have worked exceptionally hard in the pool since we returned to training last September and I am fully expecting those swimmers that narrowly missed out on the championships this year to reached their goals and be there in 12 months time.’
