Well done to the swimmers that qualified and took part in the 2020 Suffolk County Championships. The long distance 800m/1500m events were held over two evenings at UEA Sportspark in Norwich at the end of January and the main body of the Championships held at Crown Pools in Ipswich over 3 weekends from the end of January to the start of February.
West Suffolk had 71 swimmers competing in the Championships this year, which was down on 2019. Looking through the previous years entries, we had 20 swimmers not competing - due to either leaving the club, going off to university or through injury and illness. These swimmers competed in just over 500 individual races, with 5 swimmers making it through to the SKINS finals. They were: Angharad Evans (who had to withdraw due to competing for Swim England in Nice) and Charlotte White in the female event and Myles Turner, Charlie Whyte (who had to withdraw due to illness) and Henry King. West Suffolk swimmers won a total of 92 medals – 28 gold, 30 silver and 33 bronze. Swimmers missed stepping up on to the podium 35 times, with 4th place finishes across all ages and events.
County Championship titles went to the following swimmers:
Matthew Baker: 100m IM, 800, Free, 1500m Free
Robbie Brindley: 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 50m Backstroke
James Clay: 100m Backstroke, 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke, 400m IM
Angharad Evans: 50m Breaststroke, 100m Breaststroke, 100m IM
Henry King: 100m Breaststroke
Tom Page: 50m Free, 50m Breaststroke, 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke, 100m IM
Myles Turner: 200m Backstroke, 200 Breaststroke, 400m IM, 1500m Free
Charlotte White: 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 50m Breaststroke, 100m IM
In the top age age group awards, 2nd places went to: Matthew Baker (14yrs), Charlotte White (15yrs), Tom Page (16yrs) and Myles Turner (17yrs & over). Third place finishes came from: Maeve Pooley (15yrs) and James Clay (15yrs)
The overall top club title went to TeamIpswich (2856 points), with St Felix in 2nd (1551 points) and West Suffolk in 3rd place (1190 points).
The relay teams managed to secure the following: 1 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals.
