Cheddar Kingfishers Swimming Club Presentation Evening 2018

 

Cheddar Kingfishers celebrated the clubs achievements over the last at their annual presentation evening on 18 July. A fun swim was followed by a ‘bring and share’ buffet (more of an eat all you can!) before the presentations started.

 

Chairman, Carl Spencer, congratulated the swimmers on their performance and commitment throughout the year. 2018 has been a year of change for the club; with a new Chairman and committee and a new head coach (Jeff Hill).  The Chairman thanked all the swimmers, coaches, committee and parents for their support. In 2018 the club entered teams in both the Cotswold and Four Seasons Leagues, giving all the swimmers the opportunity to compete as team.  All members of the Cotswold League squad received a commemorative trophy. Twenty-four swimmers entered the Somerset County Championships, a record number for the club, with eight of these qualifying for the SW regional championships. The club has maintained its links with other local swimming clubs, giving the swimmers more opportunities for training and competition. 

In the club championships the swimmers compete in very stroke over 25m, 50m or 100m (depending on age) the 100m individual medley and 200m Freestyle, which sometimes produces surprising overall results.  

In the 10 years and under 25 m Freestyle Chelsea Hancocks and Charlie Halford were champions. In the 50m Freestyle Laura-Ann Marshman and Ed Hardman were the twelve years and under champions and Megan McClumpha and Aidan Hind the 14 years and under champions; while Millie Warren and James Bayliss won the 100m Freestyle.

In the backstroke Chelsea Hancocks and Charlie Halford won the 10 years and under event, L-A Marshman and Ed Hardman won the twelve years and under, Megan McClumpha and Aidan Hind the fourteen years and under and Millie Warren and Rhys Blake the open.

Chelsea Hancocks and Charlie Halford won the ten years and under 25m Breaststroke, L-A Marshman and Finlet halford the twelve yeasra nd under 50m Breasyststoke , Megan McClumpha and Harry Read the fourteen years and under and Millie Warren and Ben Killey won the 100m Breaststroke.

In the Butterfly events there were wins for Chelsea Hancocks and Charlie Halford, Olivia Iles and Ed Hardman, Sophie Warren and Aiden Hind and Millie Warren and Rhys Blake.

In the 100m Individual Medley Lois Brimm and Charlie Halford won the ten years and under, Laura-Ann Marshman and Ed Hardman the twelve years and under, Sophie Warren and Aiden Hind the fourteen years and under and Lucy Slingsby and Rhys Blake the open.

The final event the 200m Freestyle saw Grace Hurst and Charlie Halford, L-A Marshman and Ed Hardman, Sophie Warren and Aiden Hind and Lucy Slingsby and Rhys Blake all finish in first place in their age groups.

The overall champions in each age group, based on their performance across all the events, were; in ten years and under Chelsea Hancocks and Charlie Halford, in the twelve yeas and under L-A Marshman and Ed Hardman, in fourteen years and under Megan McClumpha and Sophie Warren and Aidan Hind, and in the open category Lucy Slingsby and Rhys Blake.

In the parents’ race, which this year took the form a mixed parent and child relay, the team of Rhys Blake, Nic Blake, Lily Greaves and Victoria Reeves came first.

Next came the presentation of the special awards, whose recipient is decided by the coaches based on the swimmers attitude and performance throughout the year. The awards for best attendance went to Simon Toogood and Holly Cockram. The most improved twelve years and under swimmers were Charlie Halford and Grace Hurst; and the most improved thirteen and over swimmers were Jessica Ferris and Will Thorne. Swimmers of the year, twelve years and under, were Lucy Todd and Finley Halford and, thirteen years and over, were Lucy Slingsby and Harry Read. Olivia Iles won the award for best Cotswold League performance. The final award of the evening went to Anna Papasouliotis who was chosen as sports personality of the year.
