A busy November for Cheddar Kingfishers

November has been a busy month for Cheddar Kingfishers Swimming Club, with a team gala, an open meet and the masters inter counties competition.

On 3 November the younger members of the club travelled to Easton in Bristol where they took part in the Four Seasons gala, swimming against teams from Burnham-on –Sea, Backwell, City of Bristol, Wells and Clevedon.  Half-term holidays and illness meant that the club was only able to field a small squad; but it gave some swimmers the opportunity to make their debut for the club. Between them the squad of Olivia, Cassy and Issy Iles, Finley, Charlie and Libby Halford, Sam and Josh Hutchinson, Zara Bird, Grace and Oliver Hurst, Bertie Thomas, Faye Bird,  Ewan Mc Clumpha, Tilly Hullah, Lucy Todd and Grace Cadwaller took five first places, four second and three thirds. Sibling rivalry spurred many of the swimmers to produce new best times but very strong performances from the other clubs pushed the Kingfishers into sixth place, with Burnham-on-sea team taking a well-earned victory.

On the weekend of 17 and 18 November a team of twelve swimmers competed in the Bristol Henleaze Open Meet at Horfield Leisure Centre, Bristol. The twelve swimmers competed in thirty-seven events, setting thirty-two new personal best times and winning twelve medals. In the 50m Freestyle there were new best times for Lola Bird, Zara Bird, Sam Hutchinson, Cassy Iles, Harry Read, Simon Toogood, and Ilsa Warman; with Read winning a silver medal. The 50m Breaststroke saw new best times for Lola Bird, Cassy Iles, Harry Read and Jake Spencer, with Read winning another silver. Success continued in the 50m Backstroke where Lola Bird, Zara Bird, Grace Cadwaller , Jake Spencer and Olivia Iles all improved their times and O. Iles won a gold medal.  In the 50m Butterfly Jess Ferris, O. Iles, Harry Read and Simon Toogood all set new times with Read and O. Iles winning silver and Toogood taking the gold medal. Lola Bird set a new personal best time in the 100m Individual Medley.

The 100m Freestyle saw grace Cadwaller improve her time, while Read and O. Iles took silver and gold medals respectively. Ed Hardman improved his time to take a silver medal in the 100m Backstroke, and O. Iles won gold in the 100m Butterfly. In the 100m Breaststroke Read set a new time to win another silver medal, and Sam Hutchinson and I. Warman both improved their times.

Olivia Iles won a gold medal in the 200m Freestyle with Ed Hardman swimming strongly to come close to his best time.  Sam Hutchinson set a new best time in the 200m Breaststroke, while Jess Ferris tackled the grueling 400m Freestyle for the first time.

On 18 November two members of Cheddar Kingfishers, Josie Morgan and Will Thorne, represented Somerset in the South West round of the Inter-counties masters competition, swimming against teams from Devon, Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Dorset at Millfield Pool.

These are great results for the club, with success across all age groups and in a wide range of events. Cheddar Kingfishers train at Kings Fitness and Leisure, Cheddar; for more information contact reception@kingsfitness.co.ukor telephone 01934 744939.
