17 December 2018
Early December saw the final set of galas in the National Arena Swimming League season, with South Croydon Swimming Club triumphant in their match held at the Pavilions in the Park pool in Horsham.
After 4th and 5th places in the first two galas of the season, the club’s last fixture was the one that would decide which clubs would stay in Division 1 (East) for another season. Competing against five other teams from across the South of England, and with two teams to be relegated at the end of the gala, no club was safe and every point gained on the night was going to be vital if the club was to remain in the Division for a fifth season.
Opponents in the gala were Ashford Town, Bromley B, Croydon Amphibians, East Grinstead and Herne Bay.
Comprising 50 races, and designed to test the strength in depth of each club, with races across all age groups from age 10 and 11 upwards, competition was incredibly tight with, at one occasion in the evening, a single point separating South Croydon, Bromley B and Croydon Amphibians as the lead swapped hands many times.
At the ¾ mark, Bromley B had stretched their lead to 6 points but by winning 7 of the last 16 races everything changed as South Croydon clawed their way into the lead to finish as winners by 5 points from Croydon Amphibians.
Every swimmer from South Croydon played a massive part in enabling the club to secure a tremendous result, with many personal bests produced on the night. Out of the 50 races in the gala, South Croydon swimmers won 16 events and finished in the top three in 76% of the races.
The club would like to pass their thanks to everyone who swam in any of the three galas during the season, especially all those who travelled back from University to take part, as well as all parents and volunteers who assisted with the running of the events especially this third gala at which the club were the host club.
