St Johns and Highdown both winners in Primary Schools Gala

On Sunday 14th July,  four local primary schools competed in our annual primary schools gala for Key Stage 2 pupils; St John The Evangelist primary and Mary Elton school both from Clevedon plus Highdown Junior School, Portishead and Yatton Junior School, Yatton. In total, 32 swimmers took part including Clevedon & Backwell club swimmers & non club swimmers.

We were expecting a close competition were not disappointed. It was great to see different schools winning events.

Winners of the first event the Bailey Memorial relay were Highdown Juniors with St Johns were not far behind. The Highdown team were presented with the Bailey Memorial shield, first presented in 1988. This is 3rd year Highdown have won the shield since schools outside Clevedon were invited to compete in 2005.

Overall gala winners were St John the Evangelist with the highest points total and their swimmers were presented with medals provided by the North Somerset schools PE association.

Thanks to all volunteers (including young volunteers and parents whose children were not competing) who helped on day & with the organisation prior to the event, including club parents who encouraged their schools to enter.

Great to see club swimmers who competed in this gala demonstrating the water polo relay & woggle caterpillar race!

We hope the date will be set earlier next year and more local schools will be available to compete.
