City of St Albans Spring Open Meet

City of St Albans (CoStA) Spring Open Meet – 12th & 13th March 22

It was another busy weekend for Berkhamsted swimmers at the CoStA Spring Open with a whole host of pbs and many medals amongst the rewards for their efforts.

Saturday began with Will Franklin posting 1:21.44 in the 100m Free just outside his best time.

Then, in the 100m Breast for girls Lucy Franklin and Riley McDonnell commenced their rivalry in the 12 years age group. Lucy just came out on top improving her time from Watford just 7 days ago with 1:44.45 to place 3rd just ahead of Riley in 1:44.70 which was in itself a pb by a massive 18 seconds. Poppy Carbery set her own best with 1:54.73 and Rose Williamson recorded 2:03.48. In the 14 years age, Nell Coster showed she is not just a fly swimmer clocking 1:33.68 for gold followed by a resurgent Tamsin Moren taking the Open Gold in her best time for 2 years with 1:20.98.

Will Franklin was up again in the 50m Back with 45.26 and Fergus Reid picked up 16 years gold with 30.15 as he closes on the 30 second barrier.

Nell Coster then took on the 50m Fly reprising her time from last week with 33.68 for bronze before Josie Reid took the 15 years gold with 31.26 and Lydia Wisely & Tamsin Moren monopolised the Open age, separated by just 0.04 seconds in 33.80 & 33.84 respectively for Gold and Silver.

In the 200m Free Kate Hopper showed her continued improvement with silver in 2:20.53 knocking nearly 2 seconds from her best, Tamsin Moren took Open Gold with 2:24.60 and Lara Coster dropped by just under 3 seconds for silver in 2:36.75. In the younger ages Nell Coster pulverised her heat to improve by 20 seconds to go 2:30.42 whilst, in their first 200m competitive swims Poppy Carbery and Rose Williamson posted 3:23.95 & 3:46.76.

Josie Reid took another Gold in the 100m Fly in 1:12.45 with Kate Hopper 3rd with 1:21.97 for her own pb. Nell Coster also went pb for 4th 14 years in 1:21.62 while Lydia Wisely was 2nd in the Open age group.

Lara Coster’s recent form continued with gold in the 200m Back (2:50.47) with Poppy Carbery touching in 3:48.25.

In the boys’ 100m Back Jack Moss was nearly 13 seconds better than ever before in 1:44.21 before the final two 50m events of the first day. In the 50m Breast Will Franklin dropped 0.4 seconds to 48.44 with Jack Moss just behind in 49.83.

For the girls’ 50m Free there was a pb for Lucy Franklin (42.97) with Poppy Carbery & Riley McDonnell both going sub 40 for the first time (39.60 and 38.57). Sophie Zdesar was delighted to claim her first open meet medal with bronze in her age group clocking 38.40. Lara Coster was 5th 16-year-old with 32.25 and there was a brace of 1st & 2nd places in the 15 years age (Kate Hopper 29.26 & Josie Reid 29.90) and Open age (Tamsin Moren 29.67 & Lydia Wisely 30.81) to close day 1.

Sunday began with Josie Reid taking Gold in the 200m IM in 2:45.37. In the same event, Nell Coster was 22 seconds better than her previous best with 2:55.56 improving from 8th seed to 4th place and Rose Williamson’s first 200m IM produced 4:04.08.

6 Girls took part in the 100m Free. Poppy Awdry won gold 12 years with 1:13.44 and there were pbs for Poppy Carbery (1:33.91) and Riley McDonnell (1:25.34) and Rose Williamson, tired after her medley was just outside her best with 1:42.61. Nell Coster charged up the rankings from 16th seed to 6th with 1:10.08 and Josie Reid claimed another medal, bronze, with 1:06.13.

The Girls’ 50m Back brought 100% pbs, Riley McDonnell – 44.38; Carbery – 46.50; Rose Williamson – 51.45; Nell Coster – 37.23; Poppy Awdry - 39.26 and another bronze; Josie Reid 34.45 and Silver.

Jack Moss claimed 4th in his 200m Back with 3:02.41 and there were more medals for the girls in the 100m Back. Poppy Awdry took Bronze 1:27.94 (pb) and Lara Coster also bronze 1:16.50 (pb) with Poppy Carbery 10th in 1:40.29 (pb) and Rose Williamson hit the pads in 1:50.65.

Tamsin Moren and Kate Hopper were a class apart from their rivals in the 200m Breast posting 2:54.60 & 2:57.08. Kate Hopper’s time was a Regional Consideration time as both girls took gold in their age.

This left just the Girls’ 50m Breast and Boys’ 50m Free.

For the girls Poppy Awdry recorded 46.36, Riley McDonnell 48.04 (pb), Will Franklin 49.21, Poppy Carbery 53.14 (pb) Daisy Martin 55.48 (pb) and Rose Williamson 58.52 before Kate Hopper and Tamsin Moren dominated their age groups again with 38.32 and 37.70.

Will Franklin finished the meet with silver in the 50m Back in a 35.01 pb and Jack Moss was just 0.07 behind for bronze in 35.08 to conclude a successful weekend.
