MASTERS ENDURE UPSTREAM EVENT
Sunday 28 June (or is it still Saturday?!) 1:30am wake up!
Heading out for a 4:30am
race start...must be the Henley Classic! The 2.1km upstream
swim as the sun is rising might not be everyones ideal race but for
five hearty Masters it was just the challenge we were looking
for!
The conditions were
perfect for a fast race, water temperature 18.5C, low current. We
set off in waves with Hilary Johnson in the Elite wave followed by
the waves of male and female swimmers in wetsuits and then the
"Traditional" wave, no wetsuits, followed lastly by the "Sporting"
wave. 540 competitors in total.
Hilary finished the race
in 35:43 making her first female Masters 55+ and 80th overall.
Nuala Muir-Cochrane swam a blistering 34:03 winning the Traditional
category outright (beating all competitors in that category, male
and female) and finishing 57th
overall. Lucy Ogilvie swam a superb 35:09 making her 70th overall.
Elizabeth Knowles managed to shave 10 minutes off her time from
last year and finished in 42:45, 236 overall. Stephanie Afaganis
finished in 58:16 in the Sporting Category.
A wonderful event,
superbly organised...and we were home for
breakfast!
