June Newsletter - Summer is coming

Head Coach Report:

Congratulations to all FSC swimmers who participated in the Surrey Development Meet held over the first two weekends of June.  This meet was for all swimmers who did not qualify for the Surrey County Championships but judging from our swimmers performances at this meet FSC will have many more swimmers participating at the County Champs next year.  All FSC swimmers turned in really GREAT swims recording many Personal Best Times and winning many Medals!

Sunday 19th of June several FSC swimmers were representing Waverley Borough in the Surrey Youth Games event held at Surrey Sports Park.  FSC swimmers represented Waverley very well turning in very good performances and securing Waverley a runner up finish in the swimming events.

Congratulations to all of the swimmers who swam representing Waverley Borough.

One final note as this season winds down, I would just like to thank everyone who helps to make FSC the best team it can be.  This heart felt thank you goes out to all of the committee members who help steer the club, the FSC swim meet officials and all of the parents who volunteer their time to keep the club afloat.  And finally to all of the swimmers and coaches who make the FSC experience second to none!

Hope to see you all next season!

Coach Martin

Also a warm welcome to competition newcomers Laura Wakefield (gold medallist!) and Carrie Grafham.

We recently held our AGM on Thursday the 30th of June 2016 at 7pm at David Lloyd Club, Farnham.

Our Committee for the New Season is:

Chairman - Dimitri Tsopanakos

Secretary - Sharon Porter

Swim 21 and Club Advisor - Graham Chalkley

New Membership - Carrie Grafham

Pool Hire Coordinator - Malcolm Campbell

SCM/IT - Ben Walton

Events Coordinator - Nicky Goodall

Membership Secretary - Rachel Connelly

Welcome from New Chairman

When we joined the Club as a family three years ago, we were highly impressed with the Club's family-centric, welcoming culture and the successes that have been achieved because of this. It was the same time that Martin Edwards joined and launched his new swimming programme; a programme that completely transformed our swimmers’ mentality and progression path. Three years later, I see that this culture has evolved further, is empowered and that successes keep coming at a higher rate, in every level.

But this comes at a cost: the cost of the hard work and effort of all the people working in the background: onboarding and managing members, coaching, officiating, organising and running events, managing facilities and venues, running finances, administration of the club technology and infrastructure, communications, welfare, community involvement, charity programmes…I could go on all day about how much effort these people are putting in this Club.

And all of them are doing it with joy and a big smile. Because we all love being part of this Club.

This is exactly the reason why I agreed to take on this role, and I am so excited and feel blessed to have been trusted with chairing this Club.

Because the Club’s successes and more successes to come is You.

So thank you for this great opportunity and I am looking forward to contributing my little part also in making our Club even better in the future.

At this point, I want to say a big thank you to Chris Lee for being a fantastic Chairman all these years and wish him good luck in his new role as the Club’s President, acting as an advocate of the Club in British Swimming, the South East Region and the local Community, but also keep providing great advice along with Graham Chalkley to the Club’s committee; and the Chairman of course!

Thank you once again and looking forward to seeing you all poolside.

FINANCE Committee

We are looking for volunteers to create our Finance committee so if you have some experience and would like to get involved please contact our Chairman – Dimitri -  [email protected].

Thank You Chris Lee

Chris Lee was voted in as Club President – from the club a big thank you to Chris for all his years as Club Chairman, his hard work and dedication to Farnham Swimming Club and love for swimming.

New FSC Coaches

Big welcome to our new coaches - Richard Reed and Summer Pepper

Rich was a National level swimmer and has over 15 years coaching experience and is a great asset to Farnham's coaching team. Summer has been a swimmer at FSC and now we welcome her as a swim coach, fantastic to have her on the team.

Club Competitions/Open Meets/Galas

Thank you to all the parents who are now accepting invitations for events via Swim Club Manager - this saves a huge amount of admin time for our volunteers.  There are still a number of parents who are needing several email reminders before either accepting or declining events - please remember all our volunteers also have day jobs and manage to fit in Swim Club admin around their families and work commitments.

We are planning to increase the number of internal competitions, to enhance opportunities for swimmers in obtain qualifying times, and this will only be logistically feasible with support from parents, so please check emails, newsletters and check the FSC website for notifications.

We have entry deadlines so that our small team of volunteers can effectively coordinate several meets/events at a time.

Nicky Goodall

Thank You Volunteers

A massive thank you from the Committee to all our fantastic volunteers who helped at the Club Sprints/Mini Meet and regular run the Sunday Desk, we could not run these events without your help.

Social Committee

Save the date - Summer BBQ will take place on Saturday 17th September - details to follow

Trip to the Olympic pool - the social committee have discussed the prospect of taking a group to swim in the Olympic pool, Stratford as a winter treat. We would travel by coach and have dinner, returning around 10pm. This would be suitable for confident swimmers. At this point we want to get an idea of numbers so please email: [email protected] if you are interested.

We have established a social committee to co-ordinate and manage social events. If you are interested in getting involved please contact Nicola Douglas ([email protected])

Sunday Desk Helpers

We recently have recruited some new helpers for the next season but if you can you spare a couple of hours every few weeks to help on our Sunday Desk? If so, please contact Carrie on [email protected]. Ideally you would be asked to be available from 4.45pm-7pm or perhaps even for the first hour or last hour, full training given!

Squad Reps Needed

We are looking for a Squad Rep, for Tadpoles Black, it’s a sizeable squad so there must be someone who can help, so your squad can get information more quickly regarding any updates.

Our Reps forward Club emails to their squad members but to also take enquiries from their members and forward to the relevant person in the Club.  It is a useful link through the Club and allows information to be distributed and received quickly. If you are a parent of a swimmer in one of these squads and can help please contact Sharon on [email protected]

Leaving belongings in changing rooms – Please not leave your belongings in the changing rooms during swim sessions, please leave them clear after use so they maybe used for other swimmers and sport centre users. Please use the appropriate lockers or hand clothing and bags to parents.

Sitting Poolside - A reminder please to all parents that on Tuesday and Sunday evenings, please do not sit poolside, We do not encourage this at anytime as we wish for the swimmers to be focused on their training and to become more independent. An exception is made for first time triallists and the youngest Minnows swimmers.

Dressing appropriately - Please remind your swimmer that when not poolside to be properly dressed, children have been noted coming out into the café area in swimwear only, please wear t-shirts, shorts, outdoor clothes and footwear as appropriate.

If any of you would like to discuss any welfare issues please email [email protected].  Alternatively Elaine will be at Farnham pool from 5:45-6:45pm on Tuesdays if you would like to discuss anything.

Should you have anyone wishing to enquire about swimming trials please refer them to the website to register for a trial or contact Carrie on [email protected].

For any membership enquiries contact Rachel at [email protected]

Please use the Easyfundraising link from our website when you shop on-line – there are lots of different companies that will donate money to the Club when you shop.  Also by using the ProSwimwear link on the website you can earn back money for the Club.
