Busy and Buzzing towards Summer!

Head Coach Report:

May was a very busy month for our swimmers with many of you participating in swim meets.

FSC were represented at the South East Regional Senior Championships, the 14 and under Regional Age Group Championships as well as the Level 3 Cranleigh Gala and the Atlantis Meet.

At the Senior Region Champs Jennifer Holland led the way with an excellent 5th place in the 50m Breaststroke. Jennifer also finished 11th in the 100m Breaststroke. Molly Webster competed in the 100m and 200m Backstroke finishing a very respectable 15th place in the 200m and 30th in the 100m.

The 14 and Under Regional Champs FSC were represented in individual events by Amy Strode, Ross Porter, Alessandro Harker and Anthi Tospanakos. These swimmers were joined by Tamara Clover, Katie Stanley and Ella Rose Walton who participated in the relay events. Both Amy and Ross competed in the 100m and 200m Butterfly events whilst Alessandro swam the 100m Butterfly. Amy finished 13th in the 200m and 19th in the 100m. Ross placed 33rd in the 100m and 22nd in the 200m event. Alessandro finished 31st in the 100m. Anthi competed in the 100m Breaststroke finishing in 30th place. The FSC Relay team of Tamara, Anthi, Amy and Katie finished in 35th place in the 200m Medley Relay and Tamara, Amy, Ella Rose and Katie finished 32nd in the 200m Freestyle Relay.

All of our FSC Regional swimmers swam FAST and raced HARD with 99% personal best times! A BIG congratulations to all of our Regional Championship swimmers!!!

The Level 3 Cranleigh Gala FSC were represented by 36 swimmers! This was a fantastic turnout and many of our swimmers experienced their first ever Gala ‘on the road’! There were so many GREAT performances and medal winners for FSC making it hard to recall. You should all be proud of yourselves and aim at improving at your next Gala.

The Atlantis meet saw some of our more seasoned swimmers as well as newcomers continue to excel and to lower their personal best times!

Not to be outdone no less than 16 FSC Masters swimmers took to the London Olympic Pool to

compete in the European Masters Championships. This looked to be the largest swim meet ever

over 10,000 swimmers from all over Europe converged to London for the event!

Everyone keep up the GREAT work, and continue to train HARD and swim FAST !

Coach Martin

2. Surrey Masters – 25th June at Surrey Sports Park, Guildford, entries are out and there are 25m races and mixed 25m relays so it’s a chance for all of our Masters to have a go.

3. Farnham Carnival – 25th June – we will be looking for swimmers/parents who wish to volunteer to represent FSC and promote the club and walk the Farnham Carnival.  If you are interested please email Nicola Douglas ([email protected])

4. FSC Club Sprints – 3rd July  from 5.15pm – details sent out by SCM for Newts, Starfish Red/Black. Sharks, Barracudas and Euro Masters.  PLEASE NOTE that Tadpoles and Frogs sessions will be cancelled due to this event.

5. Open Water - Please put the Open Water Training and Regional Open Water event in the diary and ENTER NOW AS SPACES ARE LIMITED and keep the National date free too!

Regional Open Water Training - For the last few years we have had the most successful and impressive Regional Team. We anticipate starting training at Coleford Bridge Lake in Mytchett hopefully on Sunday 5th June 2016 (subject to the water temperature being high enough). Keep an eye on emails and Facebook and we will let you know whether we are starting then as soon as the temperature reaches the level set by the ASA.

As with previous years, training will most probably be at 7.45am every Sunday morning followed by cold Coke (helps to eliminate any bugs) which the Club will provide (please bring your own choice of hot drink in a flask to warm you up when you get out of the lake such as hot chocolate or hot Ribena) at the lakeside followed by a trip to McDonalds in Frimley. All of the training including the McDonalds trip is important so please make a diary space for time until around 9.45am for these sessions and the maximum benefit will be gained by attending as many sessions as possible, if not all of them.

Training will initially be for those who are aged at least 11 years old as at 31st December 2016.

Regional Open Water Championships – Westhampnett Lake (near Chichester) – Saturday 9th July 2016 at 9.00am, further details on the regional website www.southeastswimming.org.

We want to take the largest possible team to this event and the Club will give all entrants team hoodies and t-shirts to wear on the day. Regional winners as well as those placed second and third gain entry to the National Open Water Championships (these are on the 24th July 2016 for 12-18 year olds and for 19 and over).

In previous years we have won Age Group races and had entrants to the Nationals, and Molly Webster won the Gold Medal at the National Championships in 2013. Our Masters entrants have also won their age group band events.

The main National qualifier events are aimed at those aged 12 and above, although again the Region have agreed that they will run a 500m event for those who will not be aged 12 as at 31st December 2016 but who will be aged 11 as at 31st December 2016. For those aged 12 and over (as at 31st December 2016), including Seniors and Masters please complete your entry forms and let us know that you have entered asap. Let’s all get entered ready for this fun but challenging event.

The entry forms can be found here http://www.southeastswimming.org/open-water-competitions/

To race the correct distance for National qualification, swimmers will need to compete in the following events:

· Girls & Boys 12-14yrs as at 31st December 2016 – 1.5km

· Girls & Boys 15/16yrs as at 31st December 2016 – 3km

· Girls & Boys 17/18yrs and over as at 31st December 2016 - 5km

The form for girls and boys 11yrs as at 31st December 2016 - 500m, is also available at the same link http://www.southeastswimming.org/open-water-competitions/

Please bring the completed entry forms to a Club official (ideally in the first training session) for signature. Kindly pay the fee to the Club as usual and we will send a group payment to the Region.

Social Committee

We have received some great suggestions from parents of swimmers at the Club and, following these, we are hoping to increase the social aspects of the Club for all members by the addition of new social events including some fundraising activities as well as activities based on the children.

We have established a social committee to co-ordinate and manage this and they met for the first time, if you are interested in supporting this please contact Nicola Douglas ([email protected])

If you are a parent of a swimmer in one of these squads and can help please contact Sharon on [email protected]
