County Report 2014 Weekend Two

Yet again I find myself using superlatives about the team and individual performances. The team performance was amazing, supporting each other individually and as a team. The racing ability of individuals and the relay teams was fantastic and showed brilliant potential for the future. Modernian’s topped the medal table with 129 gold, 105 silver and 58 bronze medals. In total the club won 34% of the total medals awarded at the championships. We can only hope to try to achieve the same level of success at next year’s championships.

The stats from the second weekend were as follows:
• 245 personal best performances (471 in total)
• 61 regional qualifying times (136 in total)
• 6 new Bedfordshire short course county records (14 in total)

Feedback from the championships as a whole:
• Swim downs need to be taken more seriously. This accounted for some muscle soreness due to them not being completed correctly. A coach will be allocated to enforcing this role in future.
• Team kit needs to be worn from when you get on poolside. Not sit around in normal clothes, and having to be nagged by the coaching staff to change into it.
• Some swimmers have entered unnecessary events; event selection alongside coaches will need to be looked at from next season.

I also would like to take this opportunity to thank the coaching team, and committee who have made these performances possible for all of the swimmers within the club.

Junior Squad

A very successful final weekend of the County Championships from the Junior Squad! Lots more PB's being set by all swimmers and Joshua Bristow & Deborah Fridkin coming close to RQT's.
We had more medals coming from William Maltby, Harley Allan, Orla Keaveney, Joshua Bristow, Stacey Tyler and the 10&Under Girls Freesytle Relay Team (Orla, Ellis Kane, Olivia Cann, Tori Howe). Many Junior swimmers placing in the top 3 of BAGCATS in their respective age groups...
9 Years Boys - 3rd Harley Allan
9 Years Girls - 2nd Stacey Tyler
10 Years Boys - 3rd William Maltby
10 Years Girls - 1st Orla Keaveney
11 Years Boys - 2nd Joshua Bristow

The swim of the weekend for me, came from Orla Keaveney in the 400m Freestyle & 200m Breaststroke gaining her first ever Regional Qualifying Times becoming the first Regional Swimmer I have ever coached! A very proud moment at my first Counties as Junior Squad Coach and am hoping there will be more swimmers joining her very soon. Congratulations Orla!

We can take away from the weekend that lots of improvements have been made thanks to the swimmers listening and hard work but there are also lots of things to work on in training. The two things that stand out to me at the moment needing the most work are

1. Leg Kick - this needs a lot of work on all strokes and improvement as this will make a massive difference to times
2. Transitions from underwater work off the walls into the stroke. It is so important to get these skills correct and then the times will come down even faster.

Over the next few weeks I will be speaking to swimmers about the goals we set earlier on in the year to review some of these in order for them to improve and also to a few swimmers about the effort in training and also the attendance, so hopefully next year we can see even more swimmers at Counties & Regionals and lots more medals and trophies!!

Well Done Juniors!!
