Seven intrepid masters swimmers gave up the opportunity of sitting in the gallery at Crystal Palace today to do battle with the elite of Masters swimming in the South East of England at Erith. The team, consisting of Lucy, Alex, George, Judy, Hazel, Fernando and Jason, arrived to the news that a British 1,500m record had been broken in the first session so we knew we were in for a fight. In the end we could not compete with the sheer numbers of some of the other clubs to match the power of age groupers at CP, but instead opted for quality over quantity (with a bit of pig headed determination thrown in). Special mention goes to George for his first Masters Gala, and for picking up a silver medal in his age group. Judy also took a top three position in her age group and managed to sneak into the "young" team for the medley relay. But the star turned out to be Lucy, who topped her age group overall and managed to snatch a new Kent record in the 200m breaststroke (subject to ratification). Overall a great way to spend a day by the pool.
Next on the list for the Masters team is a 10k river swim in a couple of weeks followed by the Kent Masters championships. Unfortunately all the spaces on the river swim have been bagged but anyone aged 18 or over is welcome to join us at the Kent Masters in June. If you want more information please contact Jason.
