Karen Marchant - Lead Academy Coach and Teacher

Name:

Karen Marchant

Qualifications:

Club coach qualification 2002
Preliminary swimming teacher qualification in 1991 Swimming teacher qualification 1992

Years in Swimming:

Karen’s competitive career as a Master began in 1984 when she was selected to swim for our Garrison swimming team “because your Breaststroke is legal”. She did the same again in 1985.

Why did you get into coaching?

Karen’s daughter Hannah started at Hart Swimming Club as a 10 year old in 1994 – her coach pulled Karen down off poolside stuck a session into my hands and said “there you go, start coaching”.

Background/List of achievements past and present:

Head Coach at Hart swimming Club for almost 10 years. Whilst there she coached a boy to medals at the National Age groups on Breaststroke in 2006 and 2007. The Club was very small, but produced some very talented athletes despite a lack of pool time. Karen travelled to Sheffield to be the Hampshire Girls team coach 2 consecutive years. Upon retiring  in August 2011 swearing never to go near a poolside again – However, in April 2012 RRSC called Karen up and insisted that she come out of retirement to help out as they had no Head Coach. And 6 years later Karen is still with us!

Favourite Pool:

The 50m pool in Episkopi Garrison in Cyprus where she competed in 1984. It holds an abiding memory for Karen as it was her first experience of racing (at aged 26) She was so, so nervous she couldn’t even recall her 50m Breaststroke swim but at the end her husband (holding our baby son) said “you could have got out for a coffee and still won”.

Greatest achievement in swimming/coaching:

Karen took on the role of Discipline Secretary for Hampshire Masters swimming in September 2011.  Karen carried out this role until November 2017. Hampshire Masters were crowned National Inter County team Champions in 2016; the team never failed to finish less than 1 st , 2 nd or 3 rd in the Regional Competition. Karen was ‘Highly Commended’ for her efforts to promote Master’s swimming in the UK in 2015.

Favourite set:

8 x 50 No1 off 3:00 both as a coach and a competitor.

Most important piece of advice to a swimmer:

“No one can do it for you, you control your own destiny”.

Other interests/hobbies:

"Cycling, miles and miles, preferably in the sunshine. Neighbours – guilty pleasure. Welsh Rugby. Ken Bruce’s Popmaster quiz in the morning on Rd2. Coffee and cake in nice cafes on my cycling adventures."

Anything else?:  I have my own little business ‘PoolMASTERS’, it’s my way of giving back to adults who can swim pretty well but need a little coaching. Unfortunately I can’t find more suitable pool time and it makes me no money!
AND last but, not least, I’m a competent & experienced genealogist but sadly have no time for it.
