Leicester Sharks Star Selected for GBR
What a season it has been for Michaella Glenister. The 16 year old Shark has shown some remarkable progress since joining the programme 12 months ago, appearing in finals and showing improvement at regional, national and international events throughout the season. Once again, Michaella put her best foot forward at the British Swimming Championships, mixing it with the best swimmers in the country to achieve consideration times for two Junior International events this summer.
After 11 fantastic races in Glasgow last week, Michaella achieved the consideration standard for the World Junior and the European Junior Championships in the summer. This afternoon, British Swimming confirmed that Michaella has been selected to be part of the World Junior team travelling to Budapest in August as well as the European Junior team which will race in Kazan, Russia in July.
After qualifying for the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2017, Michaella has qualified as a Junior International for the first time and becomes the first International representative training at Leicester Sharks since we formed in 2011. Michaella swims for 15 hours, with up to 5 hours of land based training every week together with other members of Leicester Sharks Training Performance Programme under the guidance of Head Coach, Mark McKenna.
Michaella has said "I am delighted to be selected to represent Great Britain at these meets. The opportunity to race against the best young athletes in the world is so exciting. Hopefully this can also inspire other young swimmers to see the opportunities available to them if they put the hard work and dedication into the sport."
Head Coach Mark McKenna added “I am absolutely thrilled for Michaella and the rest of the squad. This is a great achievement for the whole team to put someone onto Junior International teams for the first time and hopefully many of our athletes within our team will now have the belief that they can kick on to this level and beyond in the future.”
A brilliant achievement after a fantastic season of progress from this young athlete, and we cannot wait to see her step up for Great Britain in Kazan and Budapest this summer.
