Message from Dimitri, Chairman

After six years of service to the Club, Martin Edwards will be stepping down as our Head Coach. I and the Committee thank Martin wholeheartedly for the time and energy he has invested in the club over the course of his service and the great success we have achieved under his leadership.

The committee has already been formulating its new 3-5 year plan for the future under new coaching leadership, including defining the attributes and expectations of our future head coach. On that note, we ran a detailed assessment and interview process which led to the appointment of existing coach, Sean Bailey as our new Head Coach!

While Martin looks further ahead to his future plans and retirement, we remind him that he is always welcome at the club under a different role: as a friend, spectator or even Masters swimmer! Please keep an eye out for news about Martin's farewell party!

Sean and Martin have agreed a transition with the committee which sees Martin continuing as Head Coach and retaining overall coaching responsibility until the end of the swimming season, and Sean assuming his new role at the beginning of next season, from mid-August 2019. We are as excited about Sean taking on this role as he is to be moving in to it. Congratulations, Sean!

For those who do not know Sean, he has been a coach at the club since mid 2018, joining us from Rushmoor Royals where he held the position of Head Coach. Sean has extensive experience having designed and run successful programmes at Rushmoor and Hatfield prior to that. He has a range of swimming qualifications and certifications and is equally focused on swimmers' happiness and well-being as he is their performance. We look forward to working with him to support his plans to grow and develop our already successful swimmers and club.

Please do reach out to Martin to wish him well and to Sean to congratulate him on his appointment!

If you have any questions or comments, you can reach out to me or any member of the committee poolside or by email. Our contact details can be found on our website.

We will need “Red Team” helpers at the Club Championships. If you have a current FSC DBS check and can help at either or both sessions, please email Fiona at [email protected]. All help is greatly appreciated!

If you would like to undertake a DBS check, it is a simple and free process, initiated by emailing Carole at [email protected] who will provide a link to the application form and then arrange a brief meeting with the applicant to verify their identification documents.

Safeguarding awareness courses

Swim England requires anyone volunteering for the club in Red or Purple roles to have completed a basic safeguarding awareness course. Therefore Carole will run a one-hour course for those Red people who hold a DBS and for Purple volunteers.

The course will be run on Sunday 1st and 15th September from 5 until 6pm, at Farnham Leisure Centre; each for up to 20 people.

Red and Purple people, please email Carole at [email protected] to let her know your preferred session: Sunday 1st or Sunday 15th September.

This course is compulsory to ensure we are properly and consistently caring for our swimmers, and to meet regulatory requirements.

All swimmers, parents and guardians are expected to be familiar with and demonstrate the standards and values set out in the club’s behaviour code on the website.

The Humdinger Swim

The Humdinger is an open Water even for individuals or teams of two or four, with the aim of completing as many 1km laps as possible in 6 hours.  This year we had two teams particiapting and record distances swam.  A mixture of FSC and running club entrants joined the fun this year leading to great results:

1st in Female team x 4 category (21k in 6 hours)

Team “Better Lake Than Never” – Kayleigh, Caroline, Sadie & Mary

1st in Mixed team x 4 category (24k in 6 hours)

Team “Lakerz” – Oliver, Nick, Andrea, “Mascot Arnie” & Charlotte

Kayleigh finishing

Maybe next year we can put together more teams?

Fareham Nomads

Fareham Nomads Kids won the event with an impressive 30K and the leading individual male with 27K and female 21K! Next year they plan to run the event earlier (It gets a bit nippy around 9pm!) and have a BBQ afterwards.

Well done Comrades & Good luck to the intrepid eight swimmers attending the Surreys this coming weekend!
