Martin Edwards Head Coach

Martin Edwards joined Farnham Swimming Club as Head Coach in August 2013 after coaching in the USA for nearly 40 years.  Over this time he coached many swimmers who have been selected to represent their country and who have won national championships and has coached three swimmers who have made their nation’s team in the Olympics, one of whom made it to the Olympic final, a feat which is not easy given the four year cycle of the tournament.  Martin also coached a swimmer who went on to become the World Champion.

Martin himself swam as a child and a youth in the West Midlands and now swims with the Farnham Masters.  He has been National Champion and has won Regional Championship Gold medals in no less than 3 of the 8 regions of the UK.  In 1972 he competed against Mark Spitz at the Olympics in Munich, swimming in the 100m butterfly.  In 1973 he was also part of the British World championship Team and in 1974 represented England at the Commonwealth Games.  He was British National Champion in the 100m butterfly in 1973 over both short and long course.

In Martin’s words he looks ‘to encourage the pursuit of excellence at the highest level of the sport in reaching the Olympic dream’.  Every swimmer has their own pinnacle to train for and to reach be it to learn to swim, their Club Champs, the County, Regional or National Championships, international representation or badge earning within learn to swim programmes.
