South West Open Water Championships 24th June 2017

SW Open water championships took place at Preston beach in Weymouth on Saturday 24th June where Three Caradon Swimmers attended. Aegean Bramley and Jackson Spry both 15 years old and attend year 10 at Ivybridge Community College and Devonport Hight School for Boys respectively and Paul Hatton is part of our Caradon Masters Team.

This was the first year the SwimEngland SW open water championships saw the wearing of wetsuits as compulsory if the water temperature was below 18 degrees  (as they were previously not permitted). This saw an increase of 58% in swimmers taking part in this years event once again held at Preston Beach Weymouth. Despite the air temperature being reasonable, the wind, wave and tide conditions were anything but. Aegean, Jackson and Paul all swam in the 3km race being the last of the day starting at 4pm during the incoming tide along with other swimmers from 15 years, 16 years, 17 years & over and Masters age groups.

The top three swimmers from each category looking to gain a qualification place at the National Open Water Championships to be held at Rother Valley, Sheffield on Monday 31st July. There was a large crowd of spectators and swimmers on the beach enjoying the event as distance swims of 5km, 750m and 1500m were also taking place.

All three Caradon Swimmers had fantastic races battling the conditions, Paul won his Masters age group with GOLD,  Aegean finishing second SILVER and Jackson third BRONZE in their 16 year age groups. All three swimmers will now be able to represent Caradon Swimming Club  at the National Championships later this month with this being the second year in a row Aegean has qualified.
