Teaching and Development Syllabus

SPLASH 3yrs +

SPLASH tots is for pre-school age children and follows the same syllabus.

The course aims to encourage the child to take part in water activities.

Instructors are encouraged to employ a range of activities and equipment to create an encouraging and enjoyable atmosphere. For this group all teachers should be in the water. Strokes and skills should be achieved consistently by the swimmer before moving on to the next class.

The syllabus shall include tuition in:

Skill Development

  • Enter and exit the water confidently and unaided using a swivel entry

 

  • Get the face wet, put in water and blow bubbles

 

  • Bob up and down to fully submerge the head

 

  • Move freely around the pool

 

  • Open eyes under water and identify objects
  • Demonstrate a push and glide and travel of 1m
  • Achieve a Floating position on the front, back or mushroom
  • Jump in to the water with support from a teacher

 

 

 

Stroke Development (with aids)

  • Travel 5 metres using an alternating kicking action on front and back

 

  • Travel 5 metres using a simultaneous kicking action front or back breaststroke or dolphin kick

 

  • Standing with arms in the water stretched in front of the shoulders, show an underwater alternating arm action

 

  • Standing with arms in the water stretched in front of the shoulders, show an underwater simultaneous arm action

 

  • Achieve a horizontal position on the back with float (s)
  • Swim unaided 5m front with arms and legs or on back with arms by the side with legs kicking.

EELS

The syllabus shall include tuition in:

 

 

Skill Development

  • Push off wall to show a horizontal position on the front with face in water without aids (3m ) with arms extended in streamline

 

  • Push off wall to show a horizontal position on the back without aids

 

  • Remaining in vertical position throughout rotate through 360o with feet off the pool floor without aids

 

  • Show a motionless floating position and hold for 5 seconds without aids on the front and the back

 

  • Enter and exit water confidently without steps unaided
  • Show pointed toes and flat feet
  • Jump in to the water unaided
  • From a floating position rotate from the back on to the front

 

 

 

 

Stroke Development

 

  • Kick 5 metres using an alternating action without aids on the front

 

  • Kick 5 metres using an alternating action without aids on the back

 

  • Kick 5 metres using a simultaneous kicking action without aids
  • Demonstrate a breaststroke arm action

 

  • Using arms and legs travel 5 metres on the front without aids

 

  •   Using arms and legs travel 5 metres on the back without aids
    •   Using dolphin undulation with pointed toes
    •   Kick 5m face in the water demonstrating confident regular breathing

OTTERS

The syllabus shall include tuition in:

 

Skill Development

  • Jump into the water from the side with confidence and without support, swim 5m

 

  • Submerge completely for five seconds

 

  • Lie flat on the front at the surface of the water without support in streamline for 5 seconds and regain the standing position

 

  • Demonstrate a figure of 8 sculling action
  • Push and glide off wall in streamline (5m)
  • Push and glide off wall in streamline – alternating leg action for 10m
  • Push and Glide submerged from the wall demonstrate a streamlined dolphin kick for 5m on the front and back
  • Hold a tuck float for 5 seconds
  • From a streamlined floating position rotate from the back to the front

 

 

 

 

Stroke Development

  • Demonstrate a side breathing action for front crawl

 

  • Kick 5m on front using a Breaststroke type kick, with feet turned out without a float
  • Demonstrate a good breaststroke arm action
  • Kick 5m on back with arms in streamline

 

  • Using arms and legs travel 10m on the front showing basic side breathing and an over the water arm action
  • 10m back crawl With a strong kick and arms over the water with a flat body position

 

 

 

 

  • Perform a dolphin kick action on front and back
  • Demonstrate a butterfly style arm action on the side making sure the action is from the shoulder not the elbow
  • 5-10m single arm butterfly
  • 5m butterfly with basic technique attempting simultaneous kick and pull.

CROCODILES

The syllabus shall include tuition in:

 

Skill Development

 

  • Perform 3 different styled jumps into the water
  • With eyes open pick up an object from the pool floor without hesitation and using both hands

 

  • Travel 5m on feet first and head first using a sculling motion

 

  • Hold a tucked floating position for 10 seconds
  • Tread water out of standing depth for 20 seconds
  • Perform a hand stand in the water
  • Perform a sitting dive with glide (in streamline) for 5m
  • Perform a forwards role in the water
  • Push and glide on the back and rotate on to the front

 

 

 

Stroke Development

  • Kick 15m using an undulating dolphin type action, on front and back

 

  • Kick 20m, on front, arms in streamlined
  • Swim 20m front crawl with arms coming out of the water and a regular breathing pattern

 

  • Using arms and legs travel 20m on the back
  • Swim 15m breaststroke showing basic arm action and legs
  • Swim 10m butterfly showing basic technique with good body undulation and a pull emanating from the shoulder

ALLIGATORS

 

The syllabus shall include tuition in:

 

Skill Development

 

  • On the back and using two feet push from the wall into a streamlined position arms overhead in line with the body for a minimum of 5 metres

 

  • Perform a feet first and head first surface dive
  • To scull 10m head first and return to the wall feet first
  • To demonstrate 5m butterfly kicking in streamline underwater
  • Push and glide on the back and rotate on to the front using streamlined butterfly kick
  • Perform a sitting dive to swim 25m on front
  • Perform a kneeling dive from the side
  • Front and back somersaults
  • Swim 5m on the front into a forward role
  • Swim 5m on the back role on to the front and perform a forward role

 

 

 

 

Stroke Development

  • Kick 25 metres using a Frontcrawl crawl leg action in streamline

 

  • Kick 25 metres using a Breaststroke leg action, with or without a float (feet must turn out!)

 

  • Kick 25 metres using Backcrawl leg action, in streamline
  • Kick 25 metres Butterfly at the surface
  • Perform 10 metres of dolphin kick action under water
  • 25m front crawl good technique with regular breathing
  • 25m back crawl with good body position and a continuous pull
  • 25m Breast stroke feet turned out and basic timing
  • 15m Butterfly showing basic technique simultaneous arms and a chin lift to breath

  • Swim 25m using Efficient Front crawl leg action (float/Streamline)
  • Swim 50m full stroke Front crawl showing good technique with regular breathing
  • Swim 25m using efficient backstroke leg action (float/streamline)

  • Swim 25m using efficient breaststroke leg action

The syllabus shall include tuition in:

 

Skill Development

 

  • Scull head first, on the back, for 5m; rotate to front; somersault, scull 5m feet first on the back
  • Perform an efficient dive, with 5m butterfly kick underwater and swim 25m
  • Perform 3 floats in succession holding each for 5 seconds
  • Perform a front and back crawl tumble turn
  • Perform a butterfly and breaststroke touch turn
  • Perform starts for all four strokes with transitions

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of lane swimming and the use of flags
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of swimming and each stroke (history)
  • Perform starts with transitions for all strokes
  • Perform turns with transitions with all strokes
  • Perform a small set of repeat swims on a turnaround time
  • Perform a repeat kick set on a recovery time

 

 

 

Stroke Development

  • Swim and complete a 4 x 25m individual medley
  • Swim 100m front crawl
  • Swim 100m back crawl
  • Swim 100m breaststroke
  • Swim 50m butterfly
