Swimming Lessons - Learn to Swim
The teaching programme is coordinated by Dick Fawn, Head of Learn to Swim and Ros Gilfrin, Learn to Swim Adminstrator at Rushmoor Royals Swimming Club.
We hold the swimming lessons at:-
- Farnborough Recreation Centre, Westmead, Farnborough GU15 3QH
- Aldershot Lido, Guildford Road, Aldershot GU12 4BP
- Yateley School, School Lane, Yateley GU46 6NW
Our lessons are taken by fully qualified teachers and are divided into small classes with each group working towards a National Teaching Plan Badge as follows:
Duckling Stages 1 to 5
The Duckling stages help children from 3 and a half years old to explore and enjoy the fun of learning to swim. With the help of their teachers, your child will develop confidence both in and out of the water, developing early water confidence prior to joining the NTPS stages.
Stages 1 and 2
These stages cover the initial process of introducing those with no or very little experience of swimming to the new water environment, developing confidence and being at ease in the water. Achieved to a great extent through informal play, the main outcomes involve moving around quite freely, submerging and opening the eyes, floating, and using the arms and legs to achieve a simple form of travelling through the water. Once these critical familiarisation aspects have been negotiated and the learners are able to travel around 5 metres, they are ready to move on to the next stage.
Stages 3 and 4
At this stage, the emphasis moves from initial confidence to building a sound foundation in those aspects of watermanship, which later on will underpin the performance of sound swimming technique. As well as becoming completely "at home" on and under the water these include developing control in water breathing and beginning to experiment with the different methods of using the limbs for propulsion.
Stages 5 and 6
The focus is now on building competence in the basic elements of using the main swimming strokes with a continuing emphasis on the importance of good streamlining and breathing control. This is accompanied by the introduction of a range of aquatic skills such as sculling, treading water and swimming underwater which are useful for water safety and personal survival.
The aim here is essentially to consolidate the aquatic skills and to develop the kicking and pulling learned in the previous stages. Along with controlled breathing, so that pupils can swim competently, using correct basic technique on three of the main strokes over the standard distance of 25 metres and on butterfly over 10 metres. In addition turns and essential safe foundation practices for diving are introduced.
Our lessons are held over three terms - Summer, Autumn and Spring and normally run for a period of 12 - 14 weeks.
Once they have passed the badge of that group, they are able to move on to the next group. These are only awarded when the skills are obtained correctly and may not necessarily mean they move up each term.
Once they have achieved Stage 7 and the teacher feels they are capable, they are promoted to the RRSC Academy swimming squad where they continue to work within the National Teaching Plan.
They are now part of Rushmoor Royals Swimming Club. As part of the club they will be able to enter internal competitions (mini-meets), competitions with other clubs and have a squad coach.
Rushmoor Royals Swimming Club is committed to teaching your children to swim in a fun and caring environment where they are able to learn at their own pace whilst having fun.
We look forward to meeting your child and introduce them into swimming.
p.s. If your child has long hair it is advisable to wear a swimming hat. A supply of RR hats at a reasonable cost is available on request.
