Understanding the ASA Award Scheme
The ASA operate a set of competitive award standards for all swimmers to work towards regardless of age. Flashes (rectangles) are awarded for each stroke when the relevant standard has been met at the bronze, silver, gold or platinum level for a particular distance.
The club operates the scheme for all strokes from 25m distance right through to 1500m distance. Badges (round) are awarded for each stroke the first time a swimmer achieves a level.
Certificates are awarded with the first badge and when a swimmer has achieved another stroke it is added to the certificate.
The scheme is an excellent way to measure progression within the sport.
The table below gives details of the times which need to be achieved:

Where can I achieve an award time?
Swimmers can achieve their times when competing in individual events at:
-
Any club event e.g. Club Champs
-
Any league gala e.g. Sussex League
-
Any friendly gala held under ASA Laws e.g. Hastings, Eastbourne SC
-
Any recognized licensed Open Meet e.g. Vanessa Knight, Eastbourne Open
Note that awards are not available for times achieved in relay events or at time trials.
How will I know if I have achieved an award?
After each time you compete in an internal club event or external gala check your newly gained personal best (PB) time against the times shown in the above table. If you have achieved a new award complete an order form, and return to the Club ‘Badge Coordinator’.
Fill out the record sheet to keep track of which badges you have achieved: HSC ASA Award Scheme badge record sheet
How much will my award cost?
Payment to be made online to HSBC 403735 Account 71061194 - Ensure payment made prior to handing in order form
How can I order an award?
You can download a printable PDF version of the order form HERE .
You can download a WORD version of the order form HERE .
Please print your completed order form and place it in the labelled folder at the pool. Once your order has been processed you will receive an email and your items will be available for collection in the designated ‘Badges’ folder.
If you have any questions regarding ordering your awards please contact Gwen Taylor the Club ‘Badge Coordinator’ on Poolside at training, or via email [email protected]
What will I do with my awards?
-
Some swimmers like to collect their awards and keep them at home. The ASA issue an Awards File which can be ordered.
-
This can be ordered at the same time as your badges and flashes.
-
Some swimmers sew them on to a swimming towel.
But we would encourage you to:
Please see below an example of how to sew your badges onto your shirt:
