Haringey Aquatics' Northumberland Park Community Programme at Duke's Aldridge Academy
Learning to swim - why do it?
Swimming is a fun and healthy activity that you can enjoy on your own or with friends and family, on holiday or regularly through out the year. It’s great for children’s development and helps keep heart and lungs healthy, improves stamina, strength, flexibility and co-ordination and boosts confidence and self-esteem.
Being able to swim opens the door to a whole range of other leisure activities like surfing, wind surfing, open water swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing and sailing.
Keen swimmers who enjoy competition will have opportunities to participate in a range of aquatic sports including swimming, open water swimming, triathlon, water polo, diving and synchro swimming.
Being able to swim well also opens up opportunities for training as a lifeguard, swimming teacher or coach as well as part-time or full-time employment in leisure centres, swimming clubs and pools.
And last but not least, swimming is a vitally important life skill for everyone. Sadly, drowning continues to be a significant cause of accidental death of young people and adults in the UK.
