Haringey Aquatics' Northumberland Park Community Programme at Duke's Aldridge Academy

Learning to swim - why do it?

Swimming is a fun and healthy activity that you can enjoy on your own or with friends and family, on holiday or regularly throughout the year. It’s great for children’s development and helps keep heart and lungs healthy, improves stamina, strength, flexibility and co-ordination and boosts confidence and self-esteem.

Being able to swim opens the door to a whole range of other leisure activities like diving, surfing, wind surfing, open water swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, water polo, artistic swimming and triathlon. Keen swimmers who enjoy competition can pursue some of these activities competitively.

Competent swimmer may also have opportunities to train as a lifeguard, swimming teacher or coach as well as part-time or full-time employment in leisure centres, aquatics clubs and pools.

And last but not least, swimming is a vitally important life skill for everyone: sadly, drowning continues to be a significant cause of accidental death of young people and adults in the UK.

Rookie lifeguard programme

Our Rookie Lifeguard programme offers young people an opportunity to explore water safety, gradually gaining independence and confidence while learning vital life skills. Our programme will inspire and encourage your child, helping them keep themselves, their friends and their family safe in the water through a range of fun activities that lead to a series of awards.

The programme is aimed at children who are able to swim 25 metres and tread water competently. The scheme begins with Stage 1 of the Bronze Award and progresses to Stage 3 of the Gold Award, starting off at an ability level suitable for novice swimmers and progressing to the level where our Rookie Lifeguards perform impressive lifesaving tows.
