County Championships 2024

Swimmers from Banbury turned in a fantastic set of performances over the last few weeks in the County Championships. We had 22 swimmers qualify for individual events, of whom 15 made finals (top 8), and we brought home 1 gold, 7 silver and 12 bronze medals! Our swimmers were impeccably behaved at all the meets and a real credit to the club.

On the girls’ side, Isla Rennie starred with 5 silvers and 5 bronzes, with the bonus of a number of automatic Regional qualifying times. Zoe and Lyra both won a bronze medal, and Julia, Oki and Chloe were multiple finalists. Zoe and Julia also gained Regional consideration times.

The boys were not to be outdone; Owen won 1 gold and 4 bronze medals. Henry won 1 silver, and two of the relay teams won medals in very exciting races; the boys 13/14 years medley relay of Connor, Rafe, Jeremiah and Thomas won a bronze, and Owen joined with Sasha, Jeriah and Harrison to win silver in the Junior Boys (16&U) freestyle relay. Sasha, Harrison, Connor, Rafe, Ryan, Archie and Oliver were all finalists. In addition, Owen and Sasha gained automatic Regional qualifying times, and Rafe and Connor consideration times.

It was great to see how many swimmers we had competing across all age groups and squads, from Development to Competitive and Performance squads. Although we were one of the smallest teams competing, we punched above our weight in the team competition. We were also well represented among the officials (Iain, Hui, Julian, Anna, Martin) and volunteer marshals – thank you to everyone who helped with this.

Well done to all swimmers, and thank you to our Coaches and Team Managers (Sue, Emma, Charlie, Ed, Craig, Grace, Clare, Caroline) for enabling everyone to perform at their best.

Swim England Awards 2023

2023 Junior Captain Zoë Anderson was recently shortlisted for the 2023 Swim England National ‘Youth Champion’ Award. Zoë was  nominated by the Club for championing the voice of young people within aquatic sports, including campaigning to the Club Committee for improved facilities (new diving blocks) and training time, raising nearly £400 for Diabetes UK by swimming 50 miles in under two months, and acting as a role model and mentor for our younger swimmers. Zoë was recently invited to attend the Awards ceremony held at Birmingham University, where guests included a number of Olympic swimmers; although not ultimately winning this year’s award, to make the final group of nominees is a great achievement and publicity for our club!
